What's New From Square: November Features Coming Soon (Volume 16)

Hey Square Community,

Two weeks ago, we rolled out Volume 15, and the response has been incredible. Thank you to everyone who shared feedback, asked questions, and helped other sellers navigate the changes.

We're here with another set of features and improvements coming this month across payments and checkout, kitchen operations, item management, staff tools, and account management. These start rolling out November 16 and correspond to app version 7.32.

This is Volume 16. Here's what's new.

Inventory Management

Set item option colors from the item page 🇦🇺 🇨🇦 🇬🇧 🇮🇪 🇺🇸 🇯🇵 🇪🇸 🇫🇷

A color picker sits next to every color-based option on the item sheet, so each swatch gets its color while the item is still open. Building color swatches used to mean leaving the item and working in the standalone Options page.

Why it matters: A boutique adding a T-shirt in six colors can set navy, olive, and the rest without moving between the item and a separate options page. Color setup stays part of creating the item, so the catalog entry is finished in one sitting.

Access: Available on Square Free. In Dashboard, open an item to add or edit its options. When editing a color-based item option, a color picker appears next to each option.

Payments & Checkout

Accept bank payments on Payment Links 🇺🇸

Customers pay a Payment Link from their bank account with an Automated Clearing House (ACH) bank payment, in addition to paying by card. The customer connects and authorizes their bank account through Plaid as part of paying the link.

Why it matters: Larger payments are often collected remotely, and some customers pay those from a bank account rather than by card. A Payment Link that takes bank payments lets a seller send one link and collect the full amount without a card involved.

Access: On by default for eligible US sellers. To turn off bank payments, go to Payment Links settings in Dashboard. The setting also applies to Payment Links created through the Checkout API. Subscription Payment Links don’t offer bank payments.

Hide $0 items from printed customer receipts 🇺🇸 🇬🇧

A Show $0 items setting in Square Dashboard controls whether items rung up at $0 — an extra basket of bread, a glass of water — appear on printed customer receipts. The setting is on by default, so printed receipts list every item unless a seller turns it off.

Why it matters: Restaurants ring up free items so the order reaches the kitchen. A table that gets a complimentary basket of bread then sees a $0 line on the printed receipt next to the paid dishes. With Show $0 items turned off, that bread still reaches the kitchen and stays off the guest's receipt.

Access: Available on Square Free. In Square Dashboard, go to Settings → Account & Settings → Payments → Receipts to find Show $0 items.

Notes: Paid items, items discounted or comped to $0, and $0 items with a paid modifier always print. Kitchen tickets, the seller's copy, transaction records, reports, and exports include every item either way. The setting is turned on for a limited group of sellers in the US and UK and isn't available account-wide in either market. Where it's turned on, it applies to printed customer receipts from Square Point of Sale on iOS, Android, and Square hardware; email and text receipts list all items.

Menu & Kitchen Operations

Fire held courses from an Expo Kitchen Display System 🇦🇺 🇨🇦 🇬🇧 🇮🇪 🇺🇸 🇯🇵 🇪🇸 🇫🇷

Kitchen staff tap a course header on the Expo station to fire a held course, and a short countdown runs before it fires. A second tap cancels the countdown. Held courses used to be read-only on the Expo Kitchen Display System and could be fired only from Square Point of Sale.

Why it matters: At a restaurant running appetizers, mains, and desserts, the expeditor watches the pass and judges when the next course should start cooking. Firing from the Expo station keeps that call where the coordination already happens, rather than sending staff back to Square Point of Sale mid-service. The countdown gives the expeditor a moment to cancel if the wrong course header gets tapped.

Access: Available on Square Plus. In the Square Dashboard, go to Service settings → Courses → Hold/fire and turn on Allow firing from Expo KDS for the location. Once the setting is on for that location, staff tap a held course header on any Expo Kitchen Display System to fire it.

Drag kitchen tickets into a new sequence on Kitchen Display System (KDS) 🇦🇺 🇨🇦 🇬🇧 🇮🇪 🇺🇸 🇯🇵 🇪🇸 🇫🇷

Kitchen staff drag a ticket to a new position on the KDS screen, and the screen shows the ticket moving as it’s dragged. The new sequence is saved and syncs to other KDS devices at the same location that use the same sort mode. Dragging works on Prep and Expo KDS screens.

Why it matters: In a pizza kitchen during a Friday rush, a delivery order that needs to hit the oven next can sit behind dine-in tickets that were rung in earlier. Moving the ticket that has to go first to the top lets the kitchen work it next while the rest of the line stays in sequence.

Access: On each KDS device, go to Settings > Layout > Ticket sequence and select Manual. Select Default to turn off dragging on that device. Sequence changes made on other devices still sync to it.

Table & Guest Management

Sync reservations, guest data, and checks with Resy Powered by Tock 🇺🇸

Marking a party seated in Resy Powered by Tock opens a Square check with the guest name, party size, table, and server already on it. Reservation, guest, table, item, check, tax, and payment details stay in sync between the two systems in real time. Check activity updates course progression in Resy Powered by Tock, and closing the check marks the reservation paid. Guest notes, tags, dietary restrictions, deposits, and prepayments carry into Square as well.

Why it matters: A restaurant's reservation book and its checks are two separate records of the same table. Keeping the two in sync means nobody retypes a guest's details at the counter or closes out the reservation by hand.

Access: A Square Premium plan is required, since floor plans are part of that plan. To get started, head to the Resy Powered by Tock listing on the Square App Marketplace. Available in the US.

Split pooled tips by points assigned to each role 🇦🇺 🇨🇦 🇪🇸 🇫🇷 🇮🇪 🇬🇧 🇺🇸

Sellers give each position in a tip pool a point value, and pooled tips are divided in proportion to those points. At the end of a shift, the points for every participating team member are added together, and each person receives a share of the pool based on their own point total. Tip pools could previously be split equally, by percentage by job, or by hours worked.

Why it matters: In a restaurant where a bartender carries more responsibility than a barback, and a server more than a busser, an even split or an hours-based split doesn't reflect how the floor actually works. Points-based pooling is a long-standing request from food and beverage sellers. It lets the split follow the roles a seller has already defined.

Access: Available on Square Plus. Points weighting is set on the tip settings page under Staff in Square Dashboard.

Account Management & Security

Switch between businesses without returning to Launchpad 🇦🇺 🇨🇦 🇬🇧 🇮🇪 🇺🇸 🇯🇵 🇪🇸 🇫🇷

An account selector stays visible in Square Dashboard, so team members pick a different business without leaving the page. Moving between accounts used to mean going back through Launchpad each time. The selector also keeps a path to view every business a team member belongs to.

Why it matters: Someone who helps run a bakery and its separate catering business has two Square accounts to keep up with, and checking both used to mean a detour through Launchpad on every switch. Picking the other business from the account selector keeps that work in one place in Square Dashboard.

Access: Available on Square Free, with no setup required. The account selector appears in Square Dashboard for anyone added to two or more Square accounts, as either an owner or a team member.

Notes: Anyone who belongs to a single Square account won't see the selector.

Select a Treasury Tipped Occupation Code on the Tax forms page 🇺🇸

You can select your tipped occupation in Square Dashboard to prepare your 2026 tax forms for the federal No Tax on Tips deduction.

Why it matters: If you qualify, the deduction could lower your federal income taxes on tips earned. Selecting an occupation helps ensure tax forms include the information needed to claim it.

Access: Available to US individual and sole-proprietor sellers. In Dashboard, go to Account & Settings > Business > Tax forms and select an occupation in the Treasury Tipped Occupation Code section by December 31, 2026.

This message is for informational purposes and isn’t tax or legal advice. Eligibility for the No Tax on Tips deduction depends on individual circumstances. For guidance specific to you or your business, consult a tax or legal professional.

🎉 Your Feedback in Action

These updates are a direct result of feedback and feature requests shared across the community! Here's how the Community helped shape what we're launching:

Switch between businesses without returning to Launchpad: Sellers with more than one Square account have asked for an easier way to move between them, without having to sign in and out every time, or use multiple browsers to keep track. Now an account selector stays visible in Square Dashboard for anyone added to two or more Square accounts, so you can pick a different business without going back through Launchpad. It's available on Square Free, with no setup required. Thank you @mikesclub @LagunaLuxe @Honeycombbread @Kskink @positivetouch and @thenewheadspafor raising and advocating for this feature.

Drag kitchen tickets into a new sequence on Kitchen Display System (KDS): Sellers have been asking to rearrange tickets on the KDS since 2020, when Square Champion @TheRealChipA  asked to long-press an order header and drag it to a new place on the screen. @jordan_taylor runs two prep screens and one expo screen, and the prep team wanted to move tickets around by hand. @kaijukitchenvt and @yaaascookies asked for the same thing. Now dragging tickets is available to everyone, with no Early Feature Access sign-up needed. On each KDS device, go to Settings > Layout > Ticket sequence and select Manual, and the new sequence syncs to other KDS devices at the location that use the same sort mode.

Split pooled tips by points assigned to each role: Restaurants have been asking for tip pools that reflect each role on the floor. @maribela00 wanted to define different point values for different positions, and @Shackfam505 said "we need a way to weigh the tip pool." @snowpacktaproom  found that a fixed percentage for each job doesn't give equal pay when 3 cooks and 2 bartenders work the same day, and @Rp3 asked for bussers and hosts to get a partial share. Now, on Square Plus, you give each position in a tip pool a point value on the tip settings page under Staff in Square Dashboard, and each team member receives a share based on their own point total. It's available for sellers in Australia, Canada, France, Ireland, Spain, the UK and the US.

Hide $0 items from printed customer receipts: @SJF rings up a free $0.00 canapé so the kitchen prepares it, but would prefer it doesn't show up on the guest's receipt. Now sellers in the US and UK can turn off Show $0 items in Square Dashboard (Settings → Account & Settings → Payments → Receipts), so $0 items still reach the kitchen but stay off printed customer receipts.

Fire held courses from an Expo Kitchen Display System: @LLCafe courses its food heavily and asked to fire items and courses from the Expo station so they show up on the Prep screens. Now Expo staff tap a held course header to fire it, with a short countdown that a second tap cancels. Held courses used to be fired only from Square Point of Sale. It's available on Square Plus: in Square Dashboard, go to Service settings → Courses → Hold/fire and turn on Allow firing from Expo KDS for the location.

We will be using the set item option colors from the item page feature. It should streamline our item creation process. Thank you!
