Hi sellers! 👋

We’re excited to announce that Tap to Pay on Android is now available! With this feature, you can accept contactless cards and digital wallets like Google Pay or Apple Pay with just your Android phone - no additional hardware necessary.

Using Tap to Pay on Android is easy:

  1. Make sure your POS app is updated to the latest version
  2. Add an item or key in an amount.
  3. Ask your customer for a contactless card or digital wallet.
  4. Have them hold it to the back of your phone and you’re set.

Tap to Pay on Android is available on Square Point of Sale, Invoices POS, Appointments POS on compatible Android phones, and with the Restaurant mobile POS kit. There is no monthly fee to use Tap to Pay on Android, just your usual transaction costs.

No additional set up is necessary. You can use Tap to Pay on Android right alongside your current Square hardware, it sends the money you make to the same Square account.

Thank you for the reply. All it says is secure session denial and does not allow me to accept tap to pay payments. My phone I do believe is set in developer mode. Will that hinder the ability to accept, tap to pay payments?

I did not have Developer Options enabled.

Developer Options can affect features within the Square Point of Sale app so we recommend disabling it and try to take Tap to Pay payments again.

If you have disabled the Developer Options and you are still seeing the same error message, please let me know!

Thank you for the additional information @RydeTheLight! Are you still seeing the same Secure Session Denial message? While the Developer Options was not enabled initially, let's go through the step outlined here to enabled and disabled it, just to be completely sure.

Once this is done, please close the Square app then reopen it before enabling the Tap to Pay feature.

If you are still getting an error after following the steps above, please let me know!

No luck. Still doesn't work. 😥

So I turned off developer options on my phone. Restarted it, opened the app, and IT WORKS!

Thank you for your help!

Yay, I'm so glad to hear that @OldOakMarket!

I'm going to drop you a private message to gather some more information that will help me look into this further @RydeTheLight

I disabled developer options and now tap to pay works. However, today I had a client with a chip card but not contactless. I used my magstripe reader, but got a promt to insert the chip. I do not have a chip reader.

Hello @SDavid088, thank you so much for your comment and wonderful feedback! We're so glad that the Tap to Pay feature has been a useful addition for you and your business needs. We always strive to make processing payments smoother for our merchants, so this is definitely great to hear. 😊

I am also having this problem,  I enabled and disabled Developer Options per the instructions in a previous post.  The notification also says Device Not Supported.  Unable to validate device.  Please try logging in again.

I have also made sure I was logged in.

I am using a Pixel 6 Pro.  It was working about 3 weeks ago.  But now it is not.

Worked brilliantly for me over the weekend which is our busiest weekend of the year. I let my staff use the traditional hardware but I used my phone all weekend to process payments. It's a little harder to work out when its phone to phone (you need to find 2 sensors!) but it was a life saver for me and saved me having to buy a bunch of hardware for 1 weekend. 👍

We appreciate you taking the time to share your experience using Android Tap to Pay, @lawnbrook! 🤗

I have been able to manage to reset the square card reader and it seems to now be able to pair with the phone...

I have not tried a transaction as yet but at least I have the phone recognizing the device and it still has the tap and pay option also - we shall see with the next transaction.

Thanks

I managed to get the square to reset but have not been able to process a transaction as yet, but the device is paired and the tap to pay is there also...so I will see what happens when I manage a transaction.

Thanks for your help

Yeah it was the opposite for me. Phone to phone was okay but the reader needed a full reset.

Should all be good now! I hope!🤘

I also can't get this to work on my Samsung S22+

hi there, sorry for late reply, this feature is still not working on my Android device.

Admin

Is the option still not appearing for you within the app or is there a different error message you are seeing @smashnslide?

When you have a chance, can you send me a screenshot of what you are currently seeing under Settings > Hardware on your device?

Hi, sorry I just updated and can see this now. awesome!

Same with my s23 ultra

Thank you! This fixed my issue

Thank you for this suggestion! I was racking my brains, wondering why this great feature was not working on any of my android devices! Particularly as I have Samsungs latest flagship model running the latest Android OS.

As a software developer, I have "Developer Options" turned on as one of the first things I do when getting a new device 😂. So I'm pleased that someone else had already encountered this issue and sought your help regarding it, so a quick Google search and I found this article.

I can confirm that turning off developer options and then restarting the Square POS app does indeed allow Tap to Pay to function as normal. And I've tested it using my own debit card and confirm its all working.

Thanks!

Hey @GlasgowBusking - massive shoutout for sharing. Thanks for taking the time to let everyone know it work for you as it’s great to see the community advice helping people out 💕

@tranguyen sure knows her stuff!

(edit):

This solved my problem!

Developer options somehow detail the security settings within the Square App. I didn't need to reboot, I relaunched the app after turning off developer options in Android settings.

So we HAVE to choose between using Dec options on our phone and using the Square App? Is there a fix for this yet? I don't want to switch and reboot my phone anytime I need to process a payment, if possible.
