Behind the Beta: Meet Adriana Portillo

Tell us about your Square journey.

I joined Square just over five years ago, and I’m based in our Dublin office in Ireland. My background is in restaurants. I used to be a restaurant manager before making the switch to tech. I originally came on board as part of the Customer Success team but quickly found my place as a beta manager. These days I mostly run restaurant-related betas, and I also oversee the beta program for our Spanish market. It’s been a great journey, blending my background with new challenges!

What is your favorite part about working on the beta team?

Being able to directly impact how you grow your businesses is so rewarding. It’s like we’re the behind-the-scenes crew, making sure you get the tools you need to succeed. Plus, advocating for your needs and representing your voices really feels like a huge responsibility, but also so fulfilling when we see the positive results!

What beta(s) are you most excited about right now?

I’m really excited about the new Square for Restaurants experience and all the features that come with it! We recently launched the ability to split an item, which has been a highly requested feature, along with preauthorization, scan to pay, and a super cool new orders tab. If you haven’t tried the new Square for Restaurants experience yet, I highly recommend making the switch. It’s definitely worth it!

What has been the most challenging part of helping manage betas?

The most challenging part has definitely been ensuring we get enough feedback from sellers to validate the experience. While a feature is in beta, our product teams are laser-focused on delivering something truly valuable for your business. But since I mostly work with food and beverage sellers, who are always super busy running their restaurants, it can be tough to reach them in time to make the feature better before the launch date. Getting that feedback while they’re in the thick of things can be tricky!

What makes a great beta tester?

Oh, this one’s easy! A great beta tester is all about the feedback. We want to know what’s working, what’s not, and how we can make things better for you. The more specific you can be, the better! Your insights really help us shape the experience, so don’t be shy. Share all the details!

Is there a local Square seller you regularly support?

Ooh, so many! All based in Ireland though. I get my coffee from ArtyBaker. They're just around the corner from me. For brunch, @Noshington Café  is my go-to spot, especially for their French toast. It’s seriously mouthwatering. And when I’m in the mood for the best cupcakes or sweet treats, @TheBakeryRialto never disappoints.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I can never sit still! I hit the gym four to five times a week for some heavy lifting, and when I’m not doing that, you’ll find me out hiking or playing rugby in the winter. I also love yoga and am a big fan of book clubs. During the pandemic I started sea swimming — more like cold plunges since I’m in Ireland! I always follow that up with a sauna session to warm up. By the way, any good book recs? I’m always looking for something new to dive into!

HI @AdrianaSQ !!!

Great to hear  your story and how you got to where you are.  You sound like a pretty adventurous perosn and I wish had some rec ideas to offer you.  My idea of recreation is riding rollercoasters, but if you are brave enough to play rugby, I'm guessing you ride them too. 🙂

Thanks for sharing your story and I will look forward to our paths crossing at some point here!

@AdrianaSQ Love the story and love the view!  Do you find it rewarding when you finally make an update and it just works?  & What is something you have worked on for beta that you were like, wow that's actually a really good feature request?

Square

@SVLFever  I love rollercoasters!! But they’re not really a thing in Ireland, unfortunately. Rugby definitely gives me my adrenaline fix, though! I appreciate your kind words and I’m looking forward to having you participate in some of the betas I run!

@Donnie-M Absolutely! My favourite thing is hearing how updates help save time and effort—it’s so rewarding to go through survey responses and see the real impact. We recently launched the ability to split items, so a bottle of wine can now be divided across multiple checks. It was a highly requested feature and I remember logging the request back when I was on the CS team—such a full-circle moment! I also had the incredible experience of launching Square in Spain, bringing our solutions to a whole new market.

Great to here your story!

Hello everyone! It’s a pleasure to meet you all. I operate a retail furniture store located in Central Michigan, in a quaint town that sees its population grow from around 3,000 in the off-season to about 12,000 during the summer months. I understand the importance of sharing insights, and I’m eager to contribute to this testing group.

Currently, I utilize Square for about 60-65% of my retail operations, along with various other tools that integrate fairly smoothly with Excel and Google Docs. Our business is situated in the downtown district, which has successfully retained its charm with local retail stores and restaurants, unlike many other areas that have struggled due to big-box competition near the expressways. We're fortunate to be just a couple of stores off the expressway, which has contributed to our continued growth.

I regularly use Square equipment, including two iPads on 360 stands, cash registers, and two terminals. I'm pleased to report that our business has seen a remarkable increase—55% up compared to the previous year! I am excited to be part of this testing group and am in the process of fully setting up my equipment to maximize its potential.

I want to assure you all that my intention is to be supportive and contribute positively to this group. I understand that there are members who may have a more extensive understanding of the equipment and processes, and I truly appreciate the expertise shared here. I regularly monitor my metrics and flow sheets, and I'm familiar with reporting bugs and issues. AI has also been incredibly helpful in my daily operations.

I look forward to collaborating with everyone and will do my very best to report any issues that arise. Thank you all for this opportunity! I did not mean to turn this into about me. I just wanted to make sure you have an idea of what I do and operate. I don't want to take a spot up if someone else has more to offer. This is only my 3rd test. Thank you, and nice to meet you all.
