Declined transactions report: online vs offline mode declined transactions

How can I identify if a declined credit card transactions occurred in offline mode (vs normal online mode)?

Here's the background: I run a large event with many iPads running square POS - most in normal online mode, but some in offline mode (and some that were in both during the event due to spotty data coverage).  When a Customer attempts to make a purchase at a POS that is online, and their card is declined, they either use another payment method, or leave with no product. That's as expected and fine. However, when a customer attempts to make a purchase at a POS in offline mode, and their card is ultimately declined later (once the ipad is back online and the charges are all run), they have already left with the product and we didn't receive payment for it. I understand this risk and accepted it when enabling offline mode.

My question is: how can I tell if a declined charge occurred in online / normal mode (no action necessary), or offline mode (I need to account for product loss with no revenue)?

I thought the timestamps might provide a clue but they all appear to be the time of the swipe, not the actual charge time for offline transactions.

Hi @mps1! Welcome to the Community.

Unfortunately there isn't a way to tell if a payment is declined or not in offline mode until it's uploaded. The card payments aren't fully captured or sent through the customer's card issuer until they're uploaded.
