🆕 Use a barcode scanner with Square Virtual Terminal

Now you can quickly add items during checkout using a USB barcode scanner directly in Square Virtual Terminal! When you scan an item using a barcode scanner, it will automatically be added to your cart. 

 

To set it up, simply plug it into your computer to connect. Then, select the barcode scanner button, which can be found under the Itemized sale tab in Virtual Terminal. 

 

This is especially useful if you have a large item catalogue and are looking for a streamlined checkout process to quickly ring up customers from your computer.

I'm going to have to try this out again.  The last time I used it for an event it brought up the item I scanned, but I had to select the size/color on the screen to finish the transaction even though each barcode is specifically made for each size and/or color.

How about barcode scanners for invoices on the POS....

This is a really nice addition - always love a store that uses laptops for the checkout experience!

 

Any info on the use of BT scanners? I kind of assume they’d work in the same way.

 

Tried testing out the virtual terminal on an iPad and ran into problems as it doesn’t work for a touch screen (need to press enter to move to next payment stage but not on an entry field so no keyboard). Not sure if this is a known quirk.

Hey @Sam_400º, great questions. I had a look around to see if BT scanners could be linked to the Virtual Terminal, and can confirm that this is not yet possible. This is a feature request. I'll make sure our teams are aware of your feedback and, hopefully, this will be something we'll be able to facilitate in the future. 

Thanks @k_atie - it's not something I use much but always have to push new releases to the limit 🤣
