Upcoming Fix: Modifier Set Order on POS & Other Surfaces

Hey Square Sellers!

We’ve heard your feedback loud and clear: the order of modifier sets on your RST POS doesn’t match the order you set on your Dashboard. We know this inconsistency has been frustrating, so we’re fixing it!

modifiers.png

What’s Changing?

For Square for Restaurants POS sellers, right now, your modifier sets appear in a different order on POS than they do on your Dashboard. Moving forward:

Modifier sets will now appear in the order you configure on your Dashboard, simplifying current modifier ordering rules—this order will be consistent across all Square surfaces, including:

  • POS
  • KDS (Kitchen Display System)
  • Kitchen tickets
  • Customer receipts
  • Square Online
  • Online Delivery Partners (DoorDash, etc.)

You can drag and drop modifier sets on each item to arrange them in any order for that specific item.

What’s Staying the Same?

  • On the Square for Retail and Square for Restaurants POS, required modifier sets will continue to be prompted first (this ensures smooth and efficient order-taking).

We Want Your Feedback!

We know this is an important change, and we’d love your input:

💬 What are your thoughts around required selections continuing to be prompted first on RST POS?
💬 Do you understand that the order you set will now be consistent across all Square surfaces?
💬 How urgent is it for you to customize the order uniquely for customer (Square Online/kiosk) vs. staff-facing (POS/KDS) surfaces?

These changes will be coming soon so stay posted for more details on timing in the coming months. For now, let us know what you think in the comments! 👇

Hi everyone - I'm excited to share that if you are a RST POS/F&B Mode user, you now have access to "opt in" to the feature via Square Dashboard in Release Manager. You'll be able to opt in until August 26th. After that point, we'll be fully rolling out this functionality to all sellers, not just RST POS/F&B Mode users.

Let me know if you have any questions and please feel free to share feedback/ideas here as well.

This is awesome (especially KDS and Kitchen Ticket consistency), thank you all! I've spent so many days trying to figure out creative ways to name modifiers with ACSII characters so they're in order, ha. My thoughts on your questions:

1. My only wish is that we can have the ability to toggle on/off required modifier sets coming first for Square for Restaurants POS, maybe at the modifier level ("List Modifier first on Items, if Modifier is Required")? The big red Required button should be plenty of visibility, and practically most people would put the required ones first anyways. We would prefer to set the order, even for Required modifiers.

2. Yes, and it's a huge update that will have so many benefits. This is already working with Square Online as far as I can tell, but Doordash and POS also matching would be amazing. It creates a streamlined brand feel for Square and restaurant using Square.

3. I'm not sure I fully understand this because of the wording, but the functionality would be most beneficial if Square launched the POS/KDS updates ASAP. This already appears to be mostly live on Square Online, and there is much more POS/KDS usage than Kiosk I imagine.

💬 What are your thoughts around required selections continuing to be prompted first on RST POS?
It is definitely important for required selections to be first. But it is also important to have control over their order as well. If we have 3 required selections, we need to be able to select their order

💬
Do you understand that the order you set will now be consistent across all Square surfaces?

This makes training staff easier and eliminates errors

💬
How urgent is it for you to customize the order uniquely for customer (Square Online/kiosk) vs. staff-facing (POS/KDS) surfaces?

Our customer facing ordering process is slightly different than the staff facing one. For staff we have a 'Toppings' modifier so when a customer says 'no tomatoes on my wrap' staff can quickly input this request without typing it out. We currently hide this modifier from customers ordering through our website and we instead have a 'Special Instructions' text input where they can add their requests.

AMAZING!!!!
My staff are going to LOVE this. When it comes to modifiers on the KDS it can get really confusing sometimes.

Yeah, everything being standard across everything is going to save so many headaches.

I would definitely love to have the customization come to customer facing displays ASAP.
I have required modifiers but they get lost at the bottom and people have to scroll to the bottom - More important to me would be able to toggle a collapsed menu vs display menu.

I have 6 modifier sets for customers to choose from but they display every modifier and people have to scroll and scroll and scroll.

This is great!
I have a couple of modifier notes to add, even tho not directly related to this.
1. Could there be a “Hide All Modifier” button for a set? Instead of selecting each and every single button to hide all items in each set.
2. The Holy Modifier Grail. The option to have colored modifier selections! Why? For restaurants: For Grill Cook KDS hot modifiers that need to be cooked.
For Line Cook KDS cold modifiers that need to be made (ex. Salads, dips)

I’m sure colored modifiers can easily be used in many Retail applications too.

This is amazing! We have wanted this ability and are excited it is here.  The consistency in display is huge, and being able to customize at the item level is extremely helpful, especially when it comes to the KDS side!

Is the dashboard order of modifiers considered the "default" if it is not changed at the item level?

It makes sense that the required items are first, but I agree that the color/visual indicator of the could be more pronounced. The red "required" text does not stick out.  I can definitely see uses for the customization to be different on the customer vs staff facing surfaces, but in our case that is not a priority.

I've uploaded a video to explain our frustrations with modifiers.  There are inconsistencies on this items which is resulting in a poor customer experience.  Below are the details.

The Leprechaun Lime was created in the Item Library and sells for $7.99 (Medium).  We made a modifier group called “Rainbow Boba”.  The Rainbow Boba is PRE-SELECTED for an additional charge of $.50 cents.  When the customer rings up the Leprechaun Lime, the sale price of the smoothie is $7.49 with the pre-selected Boba Modifier.  Customers who do not want boba can select “NONE” in the modifier group.

Problems:
  1. Although we manually adjusted the sort order of the Rainbow Boba to the top, on various devices, it is at the bottom of the page.  How do we get all locations to reflect that the Rainbow Boba is the first modifier group to select?  This is important because it is the key feature of the item.
  2. Weebly Problem.  The Rainbow Boba is not pre-selected when you try to order on our website via www.keva.com.  How do we get the Rainbow Boba pre-selected on the website?

This has been a recent issue for us too. It used to not be a problem, we just ordered our modifiers with numbers (1,2,3,4) but now the order is just random on our pos. It seems like every time square integrates a part of "square online" issues pop up. I think square should do a better job notifying us when they make chances to specific areas so we can check and make sure there are no issues.

We'd love to be involved in this Beta.  We use modifiers extensively in our Pizza Restaurant and Food trucks and we have some issues with modifier order when working with 3rd party apps.  Please let me know if this Beta is available for us as we are Based in Australia.

I’d be very interested. Our pos modifiers are mostly in order on those items we haven’t made any changes to however, we are unable to rearrange our modifiers if we add or add back, a modifier set that has disappeared from our items.

All of our Modifier sets are out of order and rearranging them and saving, doesn’t seem to work.

Im glad I stumbled across this thread, I thought I was losing my mind. I’ve been working with this platform since day one and the recent changes have plagued me to no end.

Is this live yet? We have set some specific products and modifiers only visible on our SF restaurants (not online) and understand the required modifiers are worked through first which makes sense but the order we set in the dashboard is still different to what is displayed. These are coffee items so we want to work through size, milk type first but is not displaying in the right order. Maybe we need to wait for an update but this seems like a pretty basic requirement on a POS?  Cheers

We've had two recent issues with modifiers. One is that several random items will have something pre-selected that shouldn't.

The other one came when I was trying out the new option to set a limit on how many modifiers can be selected.

As a bubble tea shop, we have a lot of customers ordering double textures. For example, double boba. Having the ability to allow customers to select a quantity is a game changer. BUT, if I edit the volume on the modifier set it doesn't get applied to the item. If I add the modifier to a drink that didn't have it before I made the change, THEN it updates the volume. I had to go through every single item in our menu (which is quite extensive) and change the volume manually!
