Square Retail App - Adding Images to Item Variations

I love the app! This is my third biggest gripe with it. When adding an item to Square under Items - not to the shopping cart - and you try to add a photo, you can't add a photo directly to a Variation. Because Square for Retail is designed to work best with photos, and because the variation photos actually show up in the checkout experience, it would make sense that you'd want to provide a way to easily add photos on all the variations. Alas.

The main image is the only image you can edit.

You can't add images to Variations.

Even if you open up the variation.

A work around for now would be to log in under the dashboard where you can assign variation level pictures to items. I would also make this a feature request and tag me as I would support it being added to the App and POS systems

I though that I added this as a Feature Request, I don't post often in the forum. Since I take the photos on the fly with my tablet, the best workaround I've found so far is:

  1. Add an extra, temporary, Variation on Square desktop and move the cover photo there. << Not sure this is necessary.
  2. Refresh Item on tablet and take the photo which replaces the cover photo.
  3. Refresh the Item on desktop and add the image to the Variation.
  4. Replace the cover photo with the image that is in the temporary, Variation. The problem with this is that the upload image flow for the cover photo is different from that on the variations - the variations one is better. Until that gets fixed by Square, my first step might be pointless.
  5. Delete the temporary, Variation.

Now that I'm actually typing it out, this is nuts. I think your workaround of essentually taking the photo on the tablet and emailing it to myself and uploading it onto Square would be less tedious steps.

I guess I'm confused, as I have never had an issue with item variation photos, but I'm always using the dashboard on a CPU.  When you say you can't do this on a "tablet" @Flopbot , what type of device are you specifically referring?

The factx that @JTPets commented, I believe that an issue exists, but I'm just wondering where specifcally.  An Ipad running the app?
