Redesign the end-of-day cash closing flow (denomination counting, blind counts, and clearer variance

What I'm asking for

  1. Built-in denomination counter. Let staff enter counts by bill and coin (20 × $1, 6 × $5, etc.) and have Square total it automatically. This cuts math errors and gives us a record of what was actually in the drawer.
  2. Blind close option. Give owners a setting that hides the expected amount from the person counting until after they submit. This is standard practice in food service and makes counts more honest and accurate.
  3. Clear variance breakdown. When the count is over or short, show the expected total broken into its parts: starting cash, cash sales, cash refunds, paid in/out, and cash tips. Flag the likely cause where possible, like a refund processed to cash or an unrecorded payout.
  4. Guided closing checklist. A step-by-step close screen: count drawer, record cash tips, set aside the next day's starting float, record the deposit amount, confirm. Right now these steps live in our heads or on paper.
  5. Float and deposit tracking. Let us set a standard starting float and have Square calculate the deposit automatically ("keep $150 in the drawer, deposit $412"). Then track deposits over time so we can reconcile against the bank.
  6. Accountability per person. Record who opened, who handled, and who closed each drawer, with timestamps, and require a PIN at close.
  7. Better reporting. A cash history view that shows variance trends over days and weeks, by employee and by location/device, exportable to CSV and available through the API for sellers who use their own dashboards.
  8. Mobile-first design. Large tap targets, works well on a phone or small tablet, readable in low light. Many of us close on a truck, not at a back-office desk.

Why it matters

Cash is still a meaningful share of sales for food trucks, markets, and small cafés. A better closing flow would save sellers time every single day, reduce shrinkage and disputes, and keep businesses from needing a separate app or spreadsheet just to count a drawer. It would also make Square a stronger choice for multi-location and mobile operators who need consistent cash controls across teams.

Thanks for considering this. Happy to share more detail about our process or test a beta.

We ultimately stopped having our staff count the drawer when we switched from toast to square because this was missing. We would love to have this functionality back!

This!! We switched from Redtail, which had most of this. Currently, it seems Square's "End of Day" doesn't exist.

For card payments, we have staff marking down gross card payments, the fees and subtracting them so we can match the deposit on our bank records. As for cash, if I had a penny for the counting mistakes we had, I'd be Elon Musk rich.

Kudos +200

completely agree on all this.

I have a completely separate cash counting process that i built using spreadsheet templates that do a lot of this.  I'm working on an api process to clean it up.

Your recommendations are so much better.  Hope to see this one happen.

Yeah, I just had to come up with my own workaround. We ended up creating a custom dashboard for our shop to aggregate key information so we can view the business as a snapshot.

I decided to use the Square API to pull the daily cash totals directly into our dashboard. This allows the closer to enter the cash amount and verify that everything balances out correctly.

I'm building an app for denomination counting and blind close that connects to Square. Looking for 10 beta testers, free for 3 months.
