Negative Modifer

Negative Modifer

I see there has been many requests made for negative modifiers (as far back as 2016). I want to add another request for this. I dont know why its so hard to program a negative mathematical calculation in the software. I have several variations of my sandwiches and i want to add a 'half size' modifier that would discount a specific percent or dollar value. Yes, i could go in and create 8 more variations, but that just adds clutter, wastes time, and would be unnecessary if you would just allow us to do negative amounts. This is just my use case and i have read many others, if you will not make this possible, at least tell us why. Not addressing your customers when you will not make a change for 5+ years is why people leave to use other services.

Hello, @RollinCubanos - We truly appreciate your feedback and understand your frustration regarding the absence of negative modifiers in Square's software. Your use case for creating a 'half size' modifier and applying a specific discount is well-reasoned and would indeed streamline your menu management.

The ability to have negative modifiers or apply negative amounts can certainly provide greater flexibility and efficiency for businesses like yours, and we value your input in highlighting this need.

We have updated the status of this post to "Open". This step in the Feature Request process will be a time in which other sellers can continue  to add their use cases to your idea.  Later on, we'll re-visit the post or provide any update available.

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts, and we're committed to continually improving our services based on feedback from users like you.

As an operator of multiple restaurants using Square for Restaurants I can concur that we have had requests for negative modifiers for exactly this reason, to have a half size of something. Indeed we just created another product, but with 7+ locations in one Square Account any opportunity to streamline our item library is beginning to become welcome. Negative modifiers would provide the opportunity to do these things. There are other examples of this such as charging less for a lunch portion and have that as a modifier instead of another product. Not the end of the world for us not having it but it would find usage in our environment.

Negative Modifiers are definitely needed.

They can help when you want to remove certain ingredients from a food item. This is often needed and required when creating sandwiches or other customisable items. Uber Eats, Deliveroo, Door Dash and most other local delivery apps allow you this option - precisely because it is so important to kitchens. It's crucial, I would say.

For example, we are a Cafe and we sell English Breakfast (which is a big thing in the UK). The breakfast comes with a certain amount of ingredients in it (egg, bacon, sausage, mushrooms, toast, tomato, beans, etc.), let's say 7 ingredients. But some customers do not want certain ingredients, so they would say "no egg, and no toast, but I would like an extra bacon instead", so we have to remove the egg and toast, but add the bacon instead.

At the moment, under my "Breakfast" item, I have created 2 sets of modifiers called "Positive Modifiers"(extra egg, extra bacon, etc.) and a set of "Negative Modifiers"(no egg, no bacon, etc.).
So, I can add a Positive Modifier (called "extra egg") and add a Negative Modifier (called "no bacon") to my item: and those two modifiers would be printed on my ticket under that item, so I know to add an extra egg and no bacon.
But the problem is that, while I can charge extra for that Positive Modifier (the extra egg), I can't subtract the cost of the Negative Modifier (the no bacon).

Now, the discounts are not a viable option because it ruins the buying experience. In fact, it not only ruins it but it's impossible to see the discount until you get to the checkout page. So people don't know what they're paying until they get to the checkout page.
Moreover, even when you get to the checkout page, you still don't know why your total has been reduced, you don't know what discount you got, why you got it, for which item, etc. And if you have multiple people ordering for the same table (through the QR self-serving QR code), each person ordering their own customised items, then everything becomes a mess.
So, discounts can't even be considered, unfortunately.

Seriously Square, how the hell is this STILL not a thing in 2024??? We NEED negative modifiers. Instead all we have are clumsy workarounds. Very disappointed that all these years later a simple request like this has still not been implemented!

Adding my voice to this. Negative modifiers desperately needed. I can't expect my staff to consistently learn and follow clumsy workarounds for what should be a one-tap solution.

I also need negative modifiers in the basic POS. It is simple math. No reason Square can't make it happen. If they can upcharge for a modifier than it can be discounted.

Also needing this feature - Looking to take $2.00 off a glass of wine for Happy Hour.  A $2.00 discount is automatically spread across all items on the bill (which is its own set of annoying).  Does anyone have a workaround for happy hour drink prices?

Thanks!!

Agree-I also need negative modifiers in the basic POS.

Yes, please add support for modifiers with negative values.

Definitely add our vote for negative modifiers. It's really dumb that a platform that has been in business for so long has not actually paid attention to what restaurants (their customers) need.
