Cash Rounding

People have been asking for the ability to round up hundreds of times, and Square indicates they can't do it, but in Canada, they got rid of the Penny years ago, and Square has a Cash Rounding feature already built into doing this.

It makes no sense that you can't add a feature to the US version allowing a business to round up or down cash sales automatically. Ideally, you could have user-selectable options for rounding - up only or up or down - plus amount to round to 0.05 or 0.10 or 0.25 or $1 rounding. Then, please create an account where this money could be tracked so users could apply it to a charity or an employee fund.

At the very least, let customers in the US turn on the Cash Rounding feature you've already built for Canada.

See this recent article on the Penny - if Square were to make a big announcement about getting rid of the penny, it might move the issue forward. Having my staff have to deal with pennies is a waste of time - please help us get rid of them.

@DocPopcorn Appreciate you dropping your feedback! A few things I'll say...

1. I'm sorry that you've had some tough go arounds with Customer Support. I can't speak for them when it comes to what they do and don't know in regards to Feature Requests, but what I can do is pass along your feedback about how your conversations with them have gone when it comes to our Feature Requests and roadmaps. It sounds like there are some communication gaps on our end!

2. We've very recently (like- within the last 2 months- recently), reformatted the entire Square Community. Believe it or not, our Feature Request board used to be a much bigger black hole of ideas that never had any status updates on them. So in that regard, we've made some strides! It always takes a bit of time to work out the kinks after a big relaunch, so that's what we're currently working through. LOTS and LOTS of feature requests that have been sitting, and continue to accumulate every day and we're working as best as we can to update them with accurate statuses. Bear with us!

3. ^That being said, we know it can feel like you're shouting into the void here. But I promise you, our Product Teams look through these boards and use them to help make decisions on testing and launches. Your voices matter. THEY DO!

I'm glad there's a beta in the works but having run out of pennies in the middle of the busiest month of the year is crazy. Having known that this was coming since February and not having the ability to round in December is a glaring omission. Our banks finally stopped exchanging pennies for us.

We are currently having our staff round it as we go but it's throwing our register count out the window.

This article does not mention anything about a January roll out. The article sounds like it was enabled on Dec 11.

@JoyOne Thank you for posting that, I was trying to tell everyone not to worry, that it was in beta on the dev side, and it would get there. Really you have to blame congress and the administration for a good decision to get rid of it, but leaving out how to legally handle it on the back side. There was no need not to take care of both at the same time.

@JoyOne I agree. That article made it sound like it was already available to everyone and I'm over here googling everything I can think of to find step by step instructions on how to activate it. I guess we will continue to wait.

Also, Square hasn't been very proactive about this. A few months back I reached out to support asking if there was any plans for a rounding feature, and they had no information. They should have started working on this as soon as it was announced that they were going to get rid of the penny. This is the first year that we have used Square and I was hoping for more from them with their ratings.

Fingers crossed this will be implemented (bug free) by the beginning of the new year.

Hey all, I have been able to get "early access" to the cash rounding feature, which is currently in Beta, to all three of our locations. Send an email here ( [email protected] ) and request it, it took a day or two. It's not a setting that is accessible on the user side, it must be enabled by Square. Once they enable it, it happens automatically at checkout. It did not require a system restart or any changes to my settings.

Thanks for that information, @humblebaird.. My guess is that the chronic complainers will still find something to be upset about so that they can make rude statements and judgements. But, for those who really are looking for helpful information, your post will be very useful!

@humblebaird Do you know if merchants will have to request it once its available to everyone, or if it will automatically come to everyone via an update?

@CandyLovers I have no idea. I simply run a couple restaurants that use Square, and this is how I was able to get the cash rounding feature enabled now while it is still in "beta." My guess is eventually they will enable it for all US customers by default but no clue on a timeline. I did my best to share all the details I have, I can provide no more information or answers that's all I got.
