Cash Rounding

Cash Rounding

People have been asking for the ability to round up hundreds of times, and Square indicates they can't do it, but in Canada, they got rid of the Penny years ago, and Square has a Cash Rounding feature already built into doing this.

It makes no sense that you can't add a feature to the US version allowing a business to round up or down cash sales automatically. Ideally, you could have user-selectable options for rounding - up only or up or down - plus amount to round to 0.05 or 0.10 or 0.25 or $1 rounding. Then, please create an account where this money could be tracked so users could apply it to a charity or an employee fund.

At the very least, let customers in the US turn on the Cash Rounding feature you've already built for Canada.

See this recent article on the Penny - if Square were to make a big announcement about getting rid of the penny, it might move the issue forward. Having my staff have to deal with pennies is a waste of time - please help us get rid of them.

@humblebaird Thanks for sharing!

I want to reiterate that, as noted in our Penny Rounding blog post, this feature is currently in pilot. A limited number of sellers have early access, and while we’re gathering feedback, the experience may not be fully polished yet. Since it’s still in testing, unexpected issues may occur.

Looks like we updated last night because the Cash Rounding is currently running. It seems to be working well so far. My question is will the rounding difference show on our daily report as a + or - difference for rounding. Or for example if the sale is $5.86 and the round is $5.85 will the final sale tender at $5.85 or $5.86 with a -1¢ for rounding? If so I will need to know to balance our cash drawer.

Square

@perkits Cash drawer assumes all transactions are rounded, so it will always balance.

And yes rounding shows in your reporting. More details here: https://squareup.com/help/us/en/article/8595-beta-set-up-cash-rounding

Yes I see that now. It's looking really nice. I do have one request. Could we have a bigger cash total at the bottom, or may at the top.

Employees are so use to giving the cash total from the top since it was alway the same. Just a thought.

The above is just an example.

Square

@perkits We can't unfortunately, because if the customer is paying by card (or some other payment type that's not cash) then they'd be paying $8.32. We can look at making the cash row clearer though.

That would be very helpful. Thanks!

Our company was just recently updated to this new cash rounding software.  The most current request we have is for the customer display to read both payment totals, for cash and for card.  As of right now (unless i'm missing a setting), the customer display still only reads the non-rounded total.

I think both the customer display and the register terminal should have both totals, that way everyone knows what the total is and the customer doesn't get confused when the sales associate is telling them one total, but the display is reading another one.

Can the customer display be programmed to charge the card total when the card is inserted/swiped, but still also show the cash total?

Also, we need a subtotal for cash on the screen where we are ringing everything in.

Also, if the country as a whole has eliminated the penny, why wouldn't we be rounding transactions for ALL forms of payment? It would make it so much easier for everyone to understand when using Square if all transaction types are rounded, instead of our sales associates having to emplain to customers why the total is changing based on form of payment.  I'm sure they would like to get rid of cash completely one day, but if I can't withdraw all of my money in the bank in cash due to the elimination of the penny (i.e. withdrawing all but $0.03 ), then why are we only getting rid of it in certain areas? Or is the bank going to be rounding up or down eventually too? In that case, get rid of the penny everywhere: one final round at the end of EVERY type of transaction.

Thanks for listening to my rant,

Yours truely,

A Square user who got a software update to the cash rounding system without warning a week before Christmas: our busiest season.

Hi @CandyLovers

Thanks for the feedback. If it's causing issues I'm happy to disable the beta for the time being.

As for your other feedback:

- Showing 2 totals would only apply of the customer is paying by cash. It's something we can explore but current US policy is to show the actual non rounded total.

- For the employee you can actually see the rounded amount in the cash row of the Register. This is a little small though and as I mentioned earlier we're looking to improve the visibility and presentation.

- We are waiting on guidance from the government on how rounding should function, including whether all transactions should be rounded.
