Allow dollar based discounts on items, not just transactions

I own a coffee shop that provides a $0.25 discount if customers bring their own cups or mugs. Since this is a dollar based discount, I can only apply it once per transaction. But if they bring in multiple cups/mugs for multiple beverages then I would like to apply the discount to each item ordered (or multiple times on the transaction). This is only one example of where this feature would be useful. We also give $1 off drinks to workers at nearby businesses. Sometimes they will come and order multiple drinks on a company card but I am not able to apply the discount for more than one drink.

I don't understand why percentage based discounts can be applied on items and transactions but dollar based discounts are limited to transactions only.

Online suggestions mention making the dollar based discount automatic, but there is no way to automate whether or not someone brings in a cup/mug. It only makes sense as a manually applied discount.

How to Create and Apply a Manual Item Discount in Square POS

Create the Discount

  1. Open the Square Dashboard.
  2. Go to Items & Services > Items.
  3. Select Discounts, then click Create Discount (top right).
  4. Enter a discount name (for example, a Client Cup Discount).
    • Tip: Start the name with the letter "a" so it appears near the top of the discount list (because I feel this might be a heavily used discount option) on the POS register.
  5. Change the Amount Type to Amount.
  6. Enter $0.25 as the discount amount.
  7. Leave Discount Rules blank. This will be a manual discount applied at the register.
  8. Save the discount.

Apply the Discount at the POS Register

  1. Scan or enter the item.
  2. Select the item from the cart.
  3. An expanded menu will appear on the right-hand side.
  4. Scroll down and select Discounts.
  5. Choose a Client Cup Discount from the list.
  6. Click Save.

The discount will be applied to that individual item.

Important: This discount must be applied separately to each eligible item. At this time, Square does not allow manual discounts to be applied multiple times with a quantity (the way a regular item can). Each qualifying item requires its own manual discount.

Feature request - be able to choose a quantity for "discount by amount" for instance you may have a client bring two personal cups in - so instead of ringing up two cups of the same type of coffee individually and applying the discount each time you could enter in quantity 2 in discount section to extend a $.50 discount to that client and have it show up on the receipt.

Hi EHFLOWER, I appreciate the response but this doesn't work. Dollar based discounts are not visible on the item screen. Maybe it's because we use Square for Restaurants? Not sure. But we can only add dollar based discounts on the transactions screen. Percentage based discounts are available for items and transactions; dollar based discounts are only available for transactions.

Sorry,

Hopefully, our admin can pass this info on  @tranguyen

This ability to do a dollar discount on the individual item should be a feature requests on Square for Restaurants.  I can see how it could be very useful.  I use ours frequently on square retail plus with pos.

thank you and have a  great weekend

Thanks for flagging this @ehflower!

Just off the top of my head, I wonder if the new advanced rules for manual discount might help with what you're hoping to achieve @SBCB

How it works: you can apply this discount manually at checkout but it will only apply to the item or category you have selected, rather than apply to the whole transaction.

Here's how to set it up:

  1. Go to Square Dashboard → Items → Discounts
  2. Create a discount and select Amount (fixed dollar)
  3. Under Discount Options, select the eligible items or categories
  4. Leave Apply automatically off (manual application)
  5. At checkout, apply via Review sale → Add discount

Let me know if this is helpful at all!

Hey Tranguyen,

I have already created several manual, dollar-based discounts. That's not the problem. The problem is being able to apply it more than once to a transaction. If a customer brings in two mugs, I can only give them a single Bring Your Own Mug discount on the over-all transaction.

Thanks,

SBCB

@tranguyen

hello - in square for retail when we are creating a sale at our pos we can click on the item and it will bring up a side menu which allows us to pick a discount or even multiple discounts.  Unfortunately,  If you need to attach this same discount to the item and you have multiples of same item, we have to enter each item individually and attach the discount each time.  (that could be cumbersome in the "bring your own mug discount" as in this case, but I am not even sure if the restaurant version can apply an individual discount in square for restaurants)

Ah, gotcha! Apology for the misunderstanding @SBCB and @ehflower. That is a feature request at the moment. Let me dig into this a bit more to see if I can find any information on it!

@ehflower

Square now supports 'negative' modifiers that can remove cost.

What about adding a BYOC modifier group that contains a pre-selected .25 cup fee to each applicable item, then when the customer brings their own cup, deselect that modifiers and the .25 will be removed/credited (by item).

Square Champion

@PCPowerUser : is this true, negative modifiers are now available?
