Is there a way to NOT allow discounts on specific items?

I give my staff a discount on products but I do not want to allow a discount on travel size items.  Is there a way to mark them so they can not be discounted?

It sounds like you would like the ability to restrict specific items from discounts, @burrito 🌯 
While this is not currently possible, you are able to select the categories and items that discounts apply to.
 

1. I would first recommend creating a category from your Dashboard to house all of your alcoholic beverages in.
    
2. Next, you'll create or edit a discount via your Discounts page.
   While here, toggle ON the Discount rules option in the Automatic discount section:
   
   
    
3. You'll want to select the Item or category option in the pop-up that appears here:
   
   
    
4. Next, you can select all categories that you would like the discount to apply to.
   Be sure not to select the category you created for your alcoholic beverages!

Thanks for surfacing this. Currently, we don't offer the option to restrict discounts on specific items, though I can see how this feature would be helpful for many businesses like yours.

Please add me to the beta list as well.  I just want to be able to apply discounts to only certain categories.  We sell donuts, we want to be able to do a % discount for half and full dozens.  Right now I have 3 sets of buttons.  All the doughnuts at full price, all at half dozen discount, all at full dozen discount.  But I would love to be able to just have employees select the donuts that are being ordered, and then hit a 30% off button, but for that percentage discount to not also apply to the coffee the customer is buying.

I know we can go in and manually turn off the discount for items that are not supposed to have it, but I don't trust that my employees will actually remember to do that all the time, and the money lost on items that should not be discounted and are would just be way too much.

One caveat since my announcement in the linked post - we found a bug affecting Square Register and Square Terminal, so I would recommend waiting until I update back that we're ready if you're using them.

As noted above, this is critical for our business.  We have employees buying alcohol after their shifts for 50% off and applying customer discounts to alcohol sales as well.  We need to be able to lock this down and we are unable to do so in Square.  I see that these posts go back to 2016 as a critical enhancement need and it is now 2019.  How do we move this up as a development priority?  If we cannot fix these discount issues, we're going to have to look elsewhere for a product that has more flexibility for our restaurant needs.

Hi @BakerDude - our new features are available now. Take a look in your Square Dashboard on Create Discount and choose "auto apply" to see the rules you can set up. Note that you'll need at least version 5.4 in the Square Point of Sale app for those discounts to apply automatically based on your rules.

I only see how we can apply to certain categories. My problem is that I might have a book that I don't want discounted but it's in a much larger category. Can there be a way in the item view to toggle something like "Don't allow discounts"? I need a way to have a discount apply to all except for particular items.
