Is there a way to NOT allow discounts on specific items?

Is there a way to NOT allow discounts on specific items?

I give my staff a discount on products but I do not want to allow a discount on travel size items.  Is there a way to mark them so they can not be discounted?

Re: How do I restrict all discounts on purchases of alcohol?

It sounds like you would like the ability to restrict specific items from discounts, @burrito 🌯
While this is not currently possible, you are able to select the categories and items that discounts apply to.

  1. I would first recommend creating a category from your Dashboard to house all of your alcoholic beverages in.

  2. Next, you'll create or edit a discount via your Discounts page.
While here, toggle ON the Discount rules option in the Automatic discount section:

  3. You'll want to select the Item or category option in the pop-up that appears here:

  4. Next, you can select all categories that you would like the discount to apply to.
Be sure not to select the category you created for your alcoholic beverages!

Please let us know if this isn't quite what you were looking to do, and we can dig in a bit more

Hi @salon208 — welcome to the seller community! ✌🏻

Thanks for surfacing this. Currently, we don't offer the option to restrict discounts on specific items, though I can see how this feature would be helpful for many businesses like yours.

I'll be sharing your suggestion with our Product Liaison team, who is constantly working to improve our products based on seller feedback. We'll certainly circle back with any other developments that may be useful.

Please keep in touch for updates and if you have any other questions, let us know!

is the toggle on/off discounts per item/category available with the new launch of the square for restaurant system? I was looking around and didnt see it...

So I guess there a few scenarios where turning off discounts per item/ catergory is essential.

We have long ago implemented employee PINs to restrict who can apply discounts, and this has helped a little.

But the major one is alcohol sales vs regular food&beverage.

the employee will apply the discount to the whole order, and has to manually select alcohol items and turn off the discounts.

this discount could be a set percentage (employee, military, etc.) or a fixed dollar amount, such as $5 off your purchase through square marketing.

the other scenario is certain items that are already special priced, shouldnt have discounts applied. such as a Lunch combo, happy hour items, etc. that could be 'customer' specific, in regards to employees not being able to apply their discount on certain items either.

Sorry for the late reply. A new business will do that to you.

There are a few things we'd love to do:

  • Discounts that are applicable at all levels independently (item, variant, and category) item in both the dollar form and percentage form. Example: We had a Wine discount to cut half off one of two glasses. However, to do that for only wine I had to make a variant or make a 50% discount that could be applied to anything.
  • Exemptions from global discounts. Example: I have a general discount I apply to all food and drinks, but I have a special that has a really low margin so I don't want the discount applied there. Right now our staff just has to remember. And I have some merch and I don't want it to be used for that.
  • Dollar discounts that can be applied to multiple items. Example: we had a sandwich discount of $1 per sandwich, but the discount could only be applied once. We had to make it a variable amount.
  • We have a drink minimum when we have live music. I'd like to have a quick and easy way to apply back the minimum toward only drinks, but right now it's another thing we have to do the math manually for, so when we are really busy it gets screwed up or forgotten on a regular basis.

oh and yes I am always open to being a beta tester

Our old system also allowed us to set specific discounts to a customer's file.  We had a customer category and could set differnt dicounts in that category for the different item categoris. For example, if we pulled up an employee, everything on their ticket would automatically get the employee discount for merchandise and a different discount for their food.  Or a Club member would automatically get their appropriate case club discount as they vary by different levels, but a different discount on their food  We need that in addition to restricing discounts on specific items.

Thanks for your help!

Thank you @Debbie19. I'd love to hear about the workflow for adding a customer to the sale. Are you scanning a membership card? Or do you have a button that you push when a club member shows their card, or an employee shows their employee id badge for example? I've got a scheduling site if you are up for a conversation via Google Hangout, or more detail here in community works too.

Maybe discounts could be set up to only apply to certain item categories. That way, if we don’t want the discount to apply to certain items, just give them a different category.

Would such a feature be possible?

Yes @Krhodes, definitely possible. We have some discounts tools in the works and I will circle back when they're available.

@elaine_p So great to hear this! Can't wait to hear & see more!

is there any update on this? I am shocked that Square for Restaurants was released without this option to turn on/off discounts for specific items & categories.  Please add me to the beta list...
