Switch from W2 employee to Independent Contractor

How do I switch someone from W2 employee to Independent Contractor in the system. When I check independent contractor and try to uncheck Employee, the system gives me the following warning -

I do not want to deactive her, just switch her to independent contractor.

Anyone have experience with this?

Hi @Jonny5 ! If you are switching a team member in Square Payroll from a W-2 employee to a 1099 contractor, I recommend first saving the "employment type" as both an employee and contractor.

After making that change, you can then uncheck the "employee" type. You will then be prompted to enter their last day of employment as a W-2 employee. After entering that date and confirming the deactivation, this team member should then only be classified as a 1099 contractor on Square Payroll.

Hi, I followed the steps outlined and have the Employee and Contractor both checked along with the Auto file For 1099-MISC.  However, when I try to deselect Employee, it wants me to deactivate.  Same problem as Jonny5 listed above.  I don't want the person marked as both.  Originally she was an employee and is now moving to Contractor.  Therefore, I do not need to see the name show up under Employee.  Again, just want to switch and do not want to deactivate.
