Punch card

I have an ice cream shop where we have a punch card, buy 7 cones get the 8th one free, so I need to set up a free item to track those.  How do I do that.  and one other ?, I do have gift certificates, how do I handle the following senario, total sale 14.17 cents, customer presents a gift certificate for 10.00....  which means they owe me 4.17 after they present their gift certificate, do i do that as a "split sale".    thanks in advance.

I would make a new item for your free item.  you can have it be priced $0.  as for the split payment, yes use split and choose other for your payment to track certificate sales.
