My client couldn't add a tip when paying with a Gift Card

The title of this thread has been edited from the original: GC issues

Today, I redeemed my first gift card! It was the correct amount for the services. My issue was, my client couldn't tip me because Square kept declining the gift card because she was trying to over pay then what the card was for. I couldn't figure out how to fix this situation,  so I just told my client it was ok it happens. I was going to try and run her card just for a tip but couldnt figure out how to do that either. Help?!?

you aren't able to add a tip because the app knows the value of the gift card is completely used up.  there isn't a way to just run a credit card for a tip. this is an odd situation.  I would say if the customer wants to tip on a $50  item and has a $50 GC you could do a split payment between the gift card for $49 and their credit card for $10.  This should allow the App to process tips as there is room for tips on the credit card.  not an ideal solution, the only other option I can think of would be to have a cash tip but not everyone can do that.

I just started using gift cards last month so I’m still getting used to them. When someone uses a gift certificate, a tip option comes up on the screen. However, the full gift card amount has already been used. If someone wants to tip, would they have to present a credit card? I have no idea how this works!
