Installed app on my phone (android). Did the test charge...icon still shows "square register"

Any ideas on what's happening?  If I tap the icon, it wants me to do a test charge again!

You are good to go.  There should be and "x" in the upper right corner or a dismiss button to get past the opening screen.

Square Register is the app to use.
