Solution

Processing a refund is simple! You can prompt a refund from either your Square Dashboard or your Square Register.

To refund a payment from the Square app:

- Tap the three horizontal lines then tap Activity
- Scroll through your payment history, search for the payment using the receipt or card number, or swipe the card used for the payment.
- Tap on the payment you'd like to refund  then hit Issue Refund.
If you need to refund a partial amount of the total sale, enter the amount you wish to refund.
- Select a reason for the refund and tap Refund.

Right before you hit refund in the refund process it says the funds will be taken from your bank account. What happens if the payment is still "pending" as the initial question stated? Will the "pending payment return to the customer or will it actually take the money from my account?

@BlessedLight - The funds will be sent back to your customer once the refund is no longer pending. We have to debit and receive the funds from your bank account before sending the money back to your customer. The only exception is when you have the funds to cover the refund in your Square balance. In those cases, we'll take the money from there first, meaning your deposit will just be smaller for that day. Does this help?

Hi, I am hitting the 3 lines in the upper left corner, but there is not an activity option listed.
Are you able to tell me why?

Hi @Felita -

Here are some troubleshooting steps for your browser!

Another trick you could try is to make sure you're using Google Chrome when accessing your Dashboard.

when you refund a credit card transaction your customer gets back their full amount and you get back your fees.  In the end other than paperwork it will be like nothing happened.
