Reinstate the ability to SMS text message new Clients!

Following the recent SMS outage, Square Appointments feature removed the ability to text clients who haven't texted us first - i.e. we can only text "reply" now.

Clients who haven't texted us - regardless if they have an appt. or not - shows the following alert message (instead of the text box) when you attempt to text them:

The ability to text clients first is very much needed!

The client has already booked an appointment with us (or joined the beta Waitlist group), willingly shared their phone number as a way to communicate with them, and now - we can't contact them?? This doesn't make any sense after you all rolled out all the SMS features of late, like requesting payment or a Google Review.

This has affected our business because:

- We can no longer text clientele check-in information! We work out of building that is "locked down" following Covid. We generally text our clients information to help them locate the studio and now folks are getting lost because they don't check their email.
- Our clientele skews younger & prefers SMS texting over email.
Emailing results in our clients missing messages or never responding.
- The Beta Waitlist feature is built on the premise that we can text clients about open availability and now you can't for new clients!

I would pay more to have a dedicated SMS phone number attached to my business that can be used to message anyone in the Client Directory. I don't spam my clientele! The ability to communicate via text is the main benefit of Square Appointments (in comparison to other platforms who have better scheduling features!)

Please reinstate the ability to send SMS text messages to new clients, who have willingly shared their phone number when booking an appointment or joining the beta waitlist group!

Hello everyone, I am on the Messages team and was forwarded this thread from the Appointments team.

First, let me apologize for the changes we made to our product as a result of an outage we experienced in December. Seller's SMS communications are now dependent on customers starting the conversation by replying to service messages, like a receipt, appointment reminder, or order update, just to name a few. We're also working to re-enable unrestricted outbound messaging capabilities in the upcoming months.

I believe in the power of texting as well, and know how important this channel is for you, your business and your customers. We are building some improvements which we hope to be ready to share later this quarter!

It’s incredibly, incredibly frustrating to get emails from Square encouraging me to mass blast my entire client database for Valentine’s Day but I can’t text a singular message to a client to let them know their work is complete, simply because they did not text me first.

I totally understand @Mingo (and the rest of the sellers here on this thread.) We are working on new updates as fast as we can and we'll be in touch when these are ready.

@jasonpurdy Any update on this? Thank you!

I can't email new clients either anymore so effectively after a new client ("new" from EOY 2022) books an appointment, I cannot contact them at all in Square! Super disappointing as this has really affected the client experience 😞

Thank you for letting us know, we'll take a look and get back to you.

Desperately looking for an update here. At the very least can Square let us know if there’s even an intention to reinstate fully functioning sms?

95% of my clients request text or email communication and I really don’t want appointment and receipt notifications coming from a number different than text updates.

I’ve been able to more or less keep things in check here but I’m running out of steam waiting for Square.
Full sms should probably be a premium feature, and I’d happily pay for it because chasing people on my landline wastes my time and makes them mad, but again, I can’t text them because they didn’t text me first. 🫠

Thanks mingo, I can't share too much yet, but i can tell you we're close! I would be happy to include you in first outreach to sellers in may.

My ability to text my clients has been blocked.  This is rediculous that I have to pay $10.00 more a month for this feature that I’ve had since I started with Square.

Been on the phone with square customer service for over an hour explaining my sms message option has been removed and they act like they don’t know what I’m talking about and maybe I was on a free trial of messages. No I’ve been using square for 6 years. I’m so close to changing processing. I’m NOT paying 10 dollars a month more to text guests from my own phone number.
