Feature Request: Item Back Orders

Feature Request: Item Back Orders

I think it would be beneficial to add the capability to accept back orders. Currently to allow this I essentially created an option set on items I wish to accept back orders called availability and created items in pairs where I track stock on available item but not on back order item allow customer to purchase from back order item. I think it would be cleaner if it could be done with rule on backend that says if item is backorder-able and quantity on hand is zero allow customer to order but prompt customer it was back ordered and show back order information such as estimated time frame etc and allow option to purchase any way.

That's a really good idea. We automatically hide Items in our Square-powered Apps for our Clients, but we could just leave them alone and add some logic that would show a popup message if it's an Item with 0 inventory. We may have to borrow that one!

Sure thing I feel like customer appreciate transparency when delays are involved. If you are up front about fulfillment process it eliminates requests for refunds and annoyance of late products. In my situation I tell my customers in stock items are processed and shipped within 24hrs via UPS ground. Back stock items I give them estimated time usually at least 2-3 weeks depending status of replenishment orders. Where possible I work with manufacture to drop ship these orders to customers.

I wish Square would add the Back Order functionality so it can be enabled globally for all items, at category-level for one or more categories, or at an individual item-level. Would be super useful if it also allowed allowed us to specify additional lead-times at the same levels.

Oh that sounds super interesting. So then you're more of a merchandise based operation? We've been itching to work with one and get some stuff in our portfolio.

Want to work together on some tracking status features or something like that? On the house, we'll make it for free. Just let us know what will be useful to you with your Customers and notifying them when orders are ready, being shipped etc. We have a lot of existing tech based around that, which is super helpful to our restaurant clients, but we want to teach other businesses how useful it is too - so you could be a good case study.

This was exactly what I was coming on here to say. This is especially helpful for those of us who sell handmade items. Not everything I offer is RTS when the customer purchases, I sometimes have to make it first (especially if it's being made custom) but I DO have the supplies in stock to make it. I may have a certain number already made and ready to be shipped immediately but my "blanks" inventory is interchangeable between listings as they are just the base so even when my "inventory" is gone, I still have it available just not ready to ship out next day. It would be extremely helpful to be able to select an option for "backorder" on the items I can easily recreate but may not currently have completed.

Hi! I as well was having this issue, I found a work around. It's not great, but it's working. Linking website since I do not see a way to attach a screenshot. On my website: moandcohome.com I made a variable for in stock and one for made to order. People have been using the made to order when the "in stock" option is sold out. Might Help!

I need this as well. I will make some stock that is Quick Ship while any orders after that are made-to-order and require 2-4 weeks. I don't want people not ordering, but I want to track what I already have on hand. Help, Square!

This is exactly the same situation I'm in. I make a number of "generic" items, but I also make customized ones. It would be supremely helpful if I could take "Backorders" and give an estimated timeframe for when it will ship.

I also do custom orders and would like the ability to show some sizes as on back order and some sizes will ship. If I complete all of the order except for the back order items, I would like to send an invoice for everything that shipped and show the items that are on back order. As the items become available I can make them and ship them with the same invoice. I hope someone can add this feature ASAP. Right now I can't invoice till the order is 100% shipped and completed.

I am hoping the backorder function comes soon so I don't have to switch from Square to another ecommerce site.
