How to check if a credit card is good and not from a scammer?

I think I have a credit card number from a scammer.  How can I check it without actually running the card?

there isn't a way to check if a card is real or fake without actually running it.  and there isn't a way to know if it is stolen until you run it and then the real owner flags it.
