Hey Square Community,
A few weeks ago, we rolled out Volume 14, and the response has been incredible. Thank you to everyone who shared feedback, asked questions, and helped other sellers navigate the changes.
We're rolling out a wave of new features and improvements across items and modifiers, invoices and card surcharging, Point of Sale checkout, online ordering, account security, and reporting. Some are live now, and the rest will be fully available by November 2.
This is Volume 15. Here's what's new.

Team members sign in to Square with the company credentials they already use. The organization connects its identity provider, Okta or Microsoft Entra ID, to Square through OpenID Connect (OIDC).
Why it matters: Organizations that use Okta or Microsoft Entra ID already manage staff logins there. Connecting Square means Square sign-in is secured through Okta or Entra ID along with the organization's other staff logins.
Access: A Square Premium subscription and an Okta or Microsoft Entra ID account are required. Set up the OIDC connection in the identity provider, then in Dashboard go to Settings > Account & Settings > My business > Security.

A seller's automatic card surcharge applies when a customer pays the full balance of an invoice by card on Point of Sale. That includes invoice payments in Services mode and in other modes that include invoices. The surcharge also applies when a customer pays by card in Services mode without an invoice.
Why it matters: A card surcharge is how a business covers the cost of accepting cards. Card payments on invoices and in Services mode carry the surcharge automatically, with no separate setup.
Access: Surcharging is available to sellers in the US. To start surcharging, in Dashboard go to Settings > Account & Settings > Payments > Credit card surcharges.

Real-Time Check View opens item details next to the check, and the check updates with each choice as staff edit. Edits save automatically. A tap on a check item opens its details, and a long press opens bulk edit mode.
Why it matters: Item edits show up on the check, which is where staff confirm them. Showing the check next to item details lets staff edit and confirm without switching screens.
Access: Real-Time Check View is on for food and beverage sellers on Point of Sale, with no setup required. It replaces the previous item details layout and can't be turned off.
Sellers choose whether the cart sits on the left or the right side of the checkout screen, depending on what works best for their setup. Each mode keeps its own choice, so Bar and Quick service, for example, can each have the cart on a different side.
Why it matters: A comfortable checkout layout can make repetitive tasks easier. Placing the cart on the left gives right-handed staff easier access to the item grid, while placing it on the right does the same for left-handed staff.
Access: In Point of Sale, go to More > Settings > Checkout > Cart and choose a side. The setting is available in Quick service, Full service, Bar, and Drive-thru modes.
When a customer or cashier picks a modifier, only the choices that go with it come up next. Choosing a side salad, for example, brings up dressing options just for that salad. This means a single catalog item can support up to three levels of choices.
Why it matters: A menu with many options can be a lot to work through. Showing fewer choices at each step keeps ordering quick and easy to follow.
Access: Nested modifier sets work on Point of Sale, Square Kiosk, Kitchen Display System (KDS), Ordering Profiles, DoorDash, Grubhub, and Uber Eats. They also work in third-party apps such as Fresh KDS and MarketMan, and through the Catalog API. To set one up:
The Sales report counts sales on checks that haven't closed yet alongside completed sales. Open checks are included by default, and a banner on the report says so.
Why it matters: Sales on open checks are part of the day's business before anyone settles them. Counting them shows the day's sales so far without waiting for checks to close.
Access: In Point of Sale, open the Sales report. To show only completed sales, turn off the Open Checks filter.
These updates are a direct result of feedback and feature requests shared across the community! Here's how the Community helped shape what we're launching:
Nest modifier sets for follow-up choices: Thank you to everyone who tried nested modifiers during the open beta and told us what you found. Sellers have been asking for modifiers that bring up their own follow-up choices since 2018, when @Will401wanted a customer who chooses a salad as their side to then choose their dressing. During the beta, @jennangel5 told us nested modifiers were not working on Square Kiosk, @FrostFairy saw the same on their kiosks, and @Bhcbistro wanted them to come through on their DoorDash integration. Now nested modifier sets are out of beta and rolling out to all sellers in Australia, Canada, France, Ireland, Japan, Spain, the UK and the US, with no need to turn them on from Early Feature Access. When a customer or cashier picks a modifier, only the choices that go with it come up next, with up to three levels of choices on a single item. Nested modifier sets now work on Square Kiosk, as well as Point of Sale, Kitchen Display System (KDS), Ordering Profiles, DoorDash, Grubhub and Uber Eats.
Apply card surcharges to invoice payments on Point of Sale: Since 2019, sellers who send invoices have asked for a way to pass on card fees only when a customer pays by card. @kevlowe whose invoice customers mostly pay by cash or bank transfer, asked whether Square could add a surcharge automatically to invoices paid by card. @Vontavius1 @mattsteinruck @usa and @PuebloHOA1 have asked for the same thing. Now, for sellers in the US, your automatic card surcharge applies when a customer pays the full balance of an invoice by card on Point of Sale, with no separate setup.
See open checks in the Sales report on Point of Sale: Sellers have been asking to see open tickets in their reporting since 2016, when @toolbox wanted a report showing the total amount owed on current open tickets. @kahii364 settles open tickets once a month, so sales for each day were missing from the daily report until settlement day, and @Barceloneta and @MRS7 have also asked for open tickets to show up in reporting. Now the Sales report on Point of Sale counts sales on checks that have not closed yet alongside completed sales. Open checks are included by default with a banner on the report, and you can turn off the Open Checks filter to see completed sales only.
Edit items with the check in view on Point of Sale: @DavidOhmann found that in Restaurants mode the discount screen fills the whole screen, so you cannot see the cart while adding a discount that depends on the item price. @jhowton wanted to select several items in the cart and apply the same discount to all of them. Now Real-Time Check View opens item details next to the check, and the check updates with each choice as you edit. Tap an item on the check to open its details, or long press to open bulk edit mode.
Set up enterprise single sign-on (SSO) with Okta or Microsoft Entra ID: @DeanInLondon asked whether access to the Square Dashboard could be restricted by SSO, so team members could not sign in from just any machine. Now organizations with Square Premium can connect Okta or Microsoft Entra ID to Square, so team members sign in with the company credentials they already use.
Here’s what else is happening across the Community worth knowing about:
AI in retail, the good and the bad: Square Champion @sacredheart926 asked fellow retail owners where AI has saved them time and where it has missed the mark, and the replies covered both. @direct007 called an AI receptionist answering their phones a game changer, and @PerroneTech, a one-person shop, has started using one too because phone calls kept disrupting the workflow. @ascoach turns hand-drawn customer ideas into starting artwork for custom orders, while @TCSlaguna and @DinaLRosenberg stick to product descriptions and newsletter copy.

Help test distributor ordering with Managerbot: @ConradoBrenna and the Managerbot team are looking for restaurants, bars, cafes and other food & beverage sellers to try ordering from distributors with Managerbot, now in beta. Connect your US Foods, Sysco, Performance or Gordon account, and Managerbot can create carts, search the catalogue, view order guides and set fulfillment for you, saving you time on every restock. @SVLFever is already testing it out and ran a comparison between Sysco and US Foods.
