When we invoice our customers, most of the time they will be paying in cash or through direct bank transfers. Every now and then a customer will be paying with credit card though, so I would like to know if there is a way to have Square add a surcharge/tax to those invoices automatically?
@kevlowe I'm assuming you want to add a surcharge to cover Square's processing fee? If so, it may be illegal in your state and very possibly a violation of the Visa/MC terms. It's been covered a few times on this forum but that is the breakdown.
Honestly, the best way both to avoid legal issues and/or violations as well as upsetting customers who prefer to pay by card would be a cash discount. Now to break even you'll have to bump up your regular fee, let's say 5% and then discount that 5% for cash. The processing fees are a cost of doing business, like electricity and advertising so since it doesn't make good customer relations to add surcharges for other expenses it won't sit well with customers to be penalized for paying you with a card. The cash discount is a reward, whereas the surcharge is a punishment.
