Square POS Tab names not displaying

Hi, 

 

As of a month or two ago, whenever we try to create a new tab and swipe a credit card, the tab name on the screen is blanked out/obfuscated and we cannot see the name until after the tab is created.  If we hit "New Ticket" and then swipe the credit card, the tab name displays correctly.  This was never the behavior before.  Does anyone know how to fix/revert this?

That sounds like an unexpected change in behavior! Since this just started happening in the last month or two, it could be due to a recent Square update. Here are a few things to try:

  1. Check for Software Updates

    • Make sure your Square POS app is fully updated. Sometimes, glitches like this get patched in newer versions.
  2. Try Clearing Cache or Restarting

    • If you haven’t already, try restarting the POS system or clearing cache/data (if on a mobile device) to see if it resets.
  3. Check Default Tab Settings

    • Go to Square POS settings and look at your default ticket/tab settings. If there’s an option related to tab naming or cardholder name visibility, try toggling it.
  4. Test Different Card Entry Methods

    • Since swiping a card directly when opening a tab causes this, but using “New Ticket” first works fine, it might be a bug related to how Square is processing cardholder data. You could temporarily use the “New Ticket” method as a workaround.
  5. Reach Out to Square Support

    • If this seems like a system-wide issue, I’d recommend reporting it to Square Support so they can confirm if it's a known bug or an intentional change.
