Repeat Function on Square for Restaurants POS - Bar Mode

Question for other Square for Restaurants users, particularly bars/high-volume hospitality operations:

Has anyone else experienced inconsistent behavior with the “Repeat” function on open checks under Bar Mode?

Example:

  • Customer orders 2 Miller Lites.

  • Later orders another round.

  • Bartender selects the existing “2 Miller Lite” item and presses “Repeat.”

Originally, our system would correctly repeat BOTH items (quantity of 2). At some point, we discovered it began only adding ONE item instead of repeating the original quantity. Later, it appears the behavior changed back again.

The concern is that this change appeared to occur without notification, and in a fast-paced bar environment it potentially resulted in product being served but not properly rung due to reliance on previously established system behavior.

Before anyone says “bartenders should verify quantities” — yes, absolutely. They should, and we addressed that operationally as well. But when software behavior changes inside a workflow staff has used consistently for months, issues can happen very quickly in a live service environment.

I’m asking because:

  • I personally verified this behavior myself,

  • I have a background in systems test engineering,

  • and I’m trying to determine whether this was isolated to my environment or experienced more broadly by other Square operators.

Additionally, has anyone had issues with Square gift card processing/swipe functionality depending on hardware configuration? I’ve had an open support issue regarding that for weeks now.

Not looking to bash anyone — just trying to determine whether other operators experienced similar issues and whether there’s documentation or known updates surrounding either behavior.

Appreciate any insight from the community.
