Google Analytics - over counting conversions/product sales

Hello Community!

I hope this finds you all well!

At some point in the last couple of years, we set up our Google Analytics tracking for our site, tendgreenpoint.com. Things seem to be flowing nicely, however, we continue to see an issue where GA is over counting conversions and specific product sales. Sometimes a transaction is counted once, sometimes twice, and sometimes numerous more times. I've read somewhere that this may have to do with the number of times a customer reloads the "thank you" page, but I don't think my customers are reloading that page as constantly as the over-counting makes it seem!

Any advice for common pitfalls that may be causing this? And how to correct?

For some additional color, when I look at one particular day as an example:

  • in Square, we have 1 single online order that day for 3 units of Espoma Organic Potting Mix, 8qt
  • In GA, when I drill down into Conversions-->Ecommerce-->Product Performance, I see that GA thinks we sold 6 units. 3 units sold under our internal SKU for one count and 3 units sold under some long alpha-numeric string for an additional count
  • In GA, when I drill down to Conversions-->Ecommerce-->Transactions, I can see that there are two online transactions for that day, both for 3 units of Espoma Organic Potting Mix, 8qt. One transaction ID corresponds to our Order Reference Number, the other is a string of numerals that I can't match up to anything in Square.

If you're reading this and have a follow up question to help solve the issue, send along!

Thanks,

Joe

Hello @JoeTend

In this particular case, we recommend reaching out to Google Support regarding this. Once they have looked at it if they mention that Square would need to get involved then you would need to get in touch with our eCommerce support team so they can get this escalated as we have no visibility into your Google Analytics console.
