hello @tranguyen and @RiseUpRefillVT
I am having issues with the new manual discounts and creating one that is category based. As you can see in the photo, I can't select the categories button due to the messaging saying automatic discounts by category are not supported for online ordering, but as you can also see, I don't have any of the automatic discount sections checked. Am I doing something wrong?
Side note, if I select it to be an auto discount for the POS, it allows me to select categories and then I can uncheck the automatic checkbox, but the discount doesn't function correctly as staff can add the discount to any category that exists, not just the ones am trying to limit it to. Please advise on how I can get this functionality to work as it would be very helpful.

Hey @backyard., I moved your comment to a separate thread so it'll be easier for the two of us to troubleshoot this.
This does look like a potential bug. To help us recreate this and investigate this further, can you let me know:
I'll keep an eye out for your reply!
Thanks for creating this. I'll answer the best I can
It definitely happens when I edit an existing rule. If I Click Discount Rules toggle on an existing discount, the "square point of sale and other integrations" is automatically checked so if I want it to be a manual discount, I uncheck that. Once I uncheck it, the "add item categories" grey out with the error I screenshotted before.
If I create a new rule, it does seem to allow me to select categories and save it, but the manual logic does not seem to be working as I can apply the discount to anything and everything, even if I didn't select it in the category selection.
I'm using Safari on a Mac. I'l try and create some videos to show what is happening.
Here is editing an existing discount and showing it's greyed out.
Here is a video of creating a brand new discount (it allows me to select a category) but if you ever toggle the auto discount for POS on and off, the category selection is greyed out as seen in video.
And here is a test discount I created for 10% off of the burgers category. Then I rang up a pint of beer (definitely not in the burgers category) and applied the test discount, it worked. Which for my understanding, it should not unless the item is in the burger category correct?

This is really helpful @backyard and thank you for all the screenshot/videos! I've passed this over to the team who look after this feature so they can investigate further and clarify the behaviour here.
I will follow up as soon as I have an update.
The team confirmed these are both bugs and they are working to roll out a fix. As soon as I have an update for when the fix is implemented, I will let you know @backyard !
Wonderful, thanks @tranguyen
@tranguyen Quick update as I continually work on this and test. Some functions that were buggy as mentioned above seem to be working as expected now but seeing an issue at item level (as noted in point 3 below)
1) The creation of the discounts seems to work as expected now (add item categories is no longer greyed out).
2) The logic also seems to work as expected when applying the discount at the check level (under the actions menu). It only applies the discount to the items within the categories set for that discount.
3) The issue I am still seeing is that I am able to apply a restricted discount at the item level to items not within the defined categories. I would expect the item level discount functionality to also follow the discount logic but I am able to apply any discount to any item at the item level, even if the logic has restricted it. I can create a video of this if needed.
Thanks for the continued help on this matter.
Thanks so much for testing this @backyard! if you can share a video or step-by-step guide on the item-level discount issue, that'd really help when surfacing it to the team.
@tranguyen Here is a video of showing the above screenshotted discount logic of the burger category only.
Step 1 in video shows the logic working correctly when applying the discount at the check level
step 2 in video shows the logic NOT working correctly when applying the discount at the item level (going into each item and selecting the test discount).
Let me know if you need anything additional and I'm happy to provide. Cheers
That video was really helpful @backyard! From chatting with the team, the flow where you can apply the discount at the item level (go to item detail screen > apply discount) even if it wasn't explicitly included is expected behaviour. The flow is designed to have flexibility to override at this level.
Completely agree that this isn't ideal for your workflow as you mentioned! This has been flagged to the team and logged as a feature request. I don't have an exact timeline for when the feature will be rolled out, as this will likely require some work to make sure it works for all type of discount, including BOGO and quantity based discount.
In the meantime, you could enable passcodes for discounts so that only authorized staff can apply discounts, which adds a layer of control to prevent unintended discount applications.
That makes sense. I guess there may be times where using a certain discount on individual items that ignores the logic would be necessary. In my use case, I don't want to put the requirement to use passcodes for all discounts due to the frequency we use them and not always having someone on shift who would have those permissions.
Maybe in the development of this feature request, it can be a separate setting to require a code IF the discount defies the logic associated with the discount. That way I can allow staff to use discounts that are correctly following logic, but need an override to apply a discount IF it goes against its defined logic.
Either way, this is great progress on the discounts. Now if we could just have multiple logic statements on discounts, I would be a happy camper ๐
Cheers
