Round Up for Charity

We need a round-up for charity option on our Square systems--calculator workarounds are impractical. Almost every business in my community (except those using Square) are rounding up. It has become a way to demonstrate that your business cares about non-profits in the community.

In looking back through old, locked threads. This feature was requested as far back as 2019. Throughout the past five years, the response has been that the design team is aware of the request. I think what might be helpful is for Square to tell users why it has not happened. Is it software limitations or is it related to the processing of funds?

It would be easier for me to accept that round-up will mostly likely never happen if I knew why.

Thanks so much!

Just left Toast for Square. We used Toast's round up for charity feature and EVERYONE loved it, customers, employees, community organizations who benefited from it. The fact that this feature was lacking in Square almost made us not move. But I am hopeful Square will see the light.  It will benefit them tremendously and be a selling point for those leaving other POS systems.

Still not an option, 2.5 years after this original post. Sad.

Hi everyone,

I'm the founder of GoodAPI. We run the number one donations app on Shopify including Roundup. And we've been looking into introducing these features at Square. And I came across this forum as I was looking for demand for this feature.

We make sure that all donations are compliant with commercial/co-venture regulations in the United States including filings, bonds and registrations in all 50 states. We support over 1.3 million nonprofits in good standing with the IRS and handle the disbursement of the donation reporting as well as donation receipts.

We would love to bring this ability to Square, but I'm new to Square, so I would love to get community feedback.  Would love to connect with some businesses to  learn more about their needs and share more about our approach and see if it's a good fit.

@GoodAPI

we would be happy to work with you. We have an online retail site on Shopify as well so we’d use your app in both locations.

I keep being told that Square is working on this and we’d be contacted to Beta it but I’ve been hearing that for almost a whole year.

Round up for charity is THE missing function we’d most like to see.

thanks @AlphaCoffee, that's interesting to know. I didn't know Square was working on it behind the scenes. I can understand that it requires quite a lot of legal regulations to make sure it's compliant.

I don't think I can share any email here as that will go against the forum rules, I believe. I'm trying to figure out how to private message you through Square so we can continue chatting and sharing more 🙂

You can find us easily enough on Shopify on the App Store through searching GoodAPI

With Square's ability to round to the nearest 5 cents due to the penny shortage, it's being proved that a "round up" option at checkout could be possible. As a non profit sea turtle hospital, the simple implementation of a donation "round up" option would bring in more profit for us to take care of our sea turtles. Square PLEASE create this feature-- almost all other POS System's offer this already.

Looking at the API,We're investigating building this feature, but I believe the only way we can build it is if the associate asks the customer at checkout if they want to round up the order. I don't think Square gives app developers like us the ability to automatically add the round up message on the terminal itself.

Would that work for you? Basically, your associate would ask, "Would you like to round up your order?" It will automatically calculate how much the roundup amount should be. And if the customer says yes, they click on the roundup and it adds the right amount to the order.
