Item Variation Selection (Multi-location retail)

I feel like this request is more of a programming bug rather than a feature request.

If I have an item in my item library set up as a top level item with variations. On the online store, if certain variations are out of stock at certain locations. Particularly out of stock at the current location that is selected.

On the item page, I can do neither:

• Select a different variation if variations are also out of stock at the currently selected location.
• Select a different location to explore variation stock levels at different locations.

My request would be that under the "Select an option" dropdown. These should NEVER be greyed out. They should ALWAYS be selectable even if they are out of stock to give you the option to search that variation at different locations.

Here is my particular use case this is showing me this problem.

This is an item set up for a Ludwig Evolution Drum Kit. This item has 2 variations configured. 1 for cherry color, 1 for mint green color. It's important to know that the Cherry is out of stock at all locations. The Mint Green is only in stock at our "Greystone" location.

If you are currently shopping at ANY other location other than Greystone. You can't change the store pickup location OR the "Select an Option" dropdown. Because you can do neither, there is no way to see that the Greystone location has one of these Mint Green variations. 

If you go to a different item entirely that is in stock at Greystone and change your store to Greystone and then come back to this Drum listing. Then you can see that the Mint Green is in stock.

One of the reasons I think this is a BUG is that if you click on the PICTURE of the different variations, then it'll change your "Select an option" selection which will then allow you to change locations and see that this is indeed in stock at Greystone. So clicking the picture with change this dropdown selection but you can't change the dropdown itself. This is a workaround that is very unintuitive and customers will have no idea that it works this way.

The "Select an option" needs to be selectable ALL THE TIME. Regardless of stock level.

OR

The location selection needs to allow you to change locations regardless of what item variation is selected and that variations stock level at the new location being selected.

As it stands right now. Neither one of these works. Leaving me UNABLE to see that Greystone has a Mint Green kit. Clicking the picture is the only way to trick the system to get around that. Which is a poor UX / UI design or a bug.....
