Inventory Tracking Defaulting to Always Available-- Would like to Change

Hello! Recently my inventory tracking has changed. Now every new item I create is automatically listed as "available". To change this, I have to take the extra step FOR EVERY SINGLE ITEM of changing the tracking from "track by availability" to "track by stock count". There is literally nothing in my retail store that is permanently available, so having everything marked as available as soon as I enter it is not useful to me. I think this (like many of your recent updates) is more geared for restaurants. I would like to permanently default on every new item to "track by stock count". Please tell me there is a way to do this. Otherwise you've just added a time-consuming extra step to my process. As someone who can check in hundreds of items in a single day (all tracked by stock count), this extra step is frustrating. Thanks for your help!

I just found this out today! When I asked the new Square AI it said I may need to pay for Square for Retail Plus to be able to use the change all function for this. I know this doesn't solve your problem or mine since I'm in the same boat, but it looks like they want more money out of us to do it on a large scale. I have hundreds, if not a thousand + skus in my inventory, and I'm not about to go through each one..

I'm in the same boat: I sell items by count, not by availability. It doesn't seem that difficult to give an option for this in Items & Services > Items > Settings > Item default, and by not doing this unless we give them more money, it seems like Square wants us to move to a different platform.

100% hate this new "feature..." Tracking by stock was a default before and now they updated it to where you have to change it constantly.. Just seems like a money grab.. I'm slowly getting tired of Square honestly..

Just came by to bring up the same issue. I've been using Square for 8 years and this new change is highly frustrating. Would love to hear an update.

Also in the same boat. Also frustrated. Our items are handmade, so we have a strict inventory. Multiple extra clicks every time to change every listing is so frustrating. There should be a global setting one way or another.

So I thought I found a way around this, but it doesn’t work 100% of the time… Let me see if I can articulate it in text form.

First I went through and changed about a dozen of my inventory to the “track by stock “count. Second I exported my library to a .csv file. Then I looked at what differed in the columns between the two. And I THINK the columns that applies are “stockable,” and “current quantity.” I went through and updated the stockable to all “Y” and made sure there were numbers in my “current quantity” column (some were blank). The first time I did that, and imported it back into Square, it worked! All of my items now showed tracking by stock count again.

However, when I needed to add new items, I followed this same format to add and it didn’t work with the new items. But a couple of weeks later I tried again and it didn’t work. So I don’t know what exactly is going on, but maybe this will help some of you? Best of luck!

I found the answer!!

Go to

Items & Services

-Settings

-Inventory

Under INVENTORY TRACKING choose ENABLE

There is also a button under that to enable for all existing items!

Oh heck yeah! That might be a new setting, but regardless: A SOLUTION!

It works! That is absolutely new, as in the last couple of weeks. That has been greyed out of me since this whole fiasco started! Thank you @Inannas1 you are a lifesaver!

Thanks all for the great suggestions and feedback here!

Have felt a little insane for the past few weeks navigating this! Would be amazing if big changes came with some tool tips or even a quick how-to or video primer re: new settings to manage.

Related: timing before the holidays of a new default that had to poorly impact a good percentage of the user base seems ill conceived.
