Feature Request: Require Manager Approval Before Employees Close Their Shift

Square should offer a configurable setting that prevents employees from completing their shift closeout until a manager approves it and/or all tabs assigned to them are resolved.

For bars and restaurants, an employee’s closeout is a critical accountability checkpoint. Managers need the opportunity to review unpaid tabs, unusual balances, discounts, voids, and other discrepancies while the employee is still present and can explain what happened. Discovering an issue after someone leaves makes it much harder to resolve, recover payment, or accurately document the situation.

Ideally, businesses could choose to:

  • Require a manager’s PIN before an employee completes their closeout.
  • Block closeout when the employee has open tabs, unless those tabs are paid, transferred to another employee, or explicitly approved by a manager.
  • Show managers a summary of unresolved tabs and any discounts, voids, or refunds before approval.
  • Record who approved the closeout or transfer, with an optional explanation for exceptions.

For example, if a bartender has several unpaid tabs at the end of their shift, the manager should be able to review those tabs with them before approving their departure. This helps distinguish guests who are still being served from forgotten tabs, walkouts, or payment errors.

This should be a closeout control that keeps all hours worked accurately recorded.

The goal is straightforward: give managers a chance to ask questions and resolve issues while the employee who handled the transactions is still there.

This would help protect revenue, improve shift handoffs, and create a clearer record of responsibility.
