I wanted to submit a feature request for Square Kiosk that could make it much more useful for organizations using it outside of food service.
Our organization has been exploring Kiosk as a self-service checkout option for a resource center where people can purchase books and other merchandise. The core experience is a really strong fit for this use case because it gives customers a simple, secure way to make a purchase without exposing the merchant-facing parts of Square POS.
The main limitation we’ve run into is the required pickup flow and the food-service language built into it.
For example, customers are prompted with:
“What’s your name so we can call you when your order is ready?”
That makes sense in a restaurant, but not in a retail environment where the customer already has the item in hand.
It would be incredibly helpful if Square Kiosk offered one or more of the following:
* The ability to disable the order-ready identification step
* Customizable wording for that screen
* A retail or merchandise fulfillment mode that removes restaurant-specific language
For retail, the ideal experience could simply be:
Select item → Review cart → Pay → Receipt → Done
That small amount of flexibility could make Kiosk a great fit for bookstores, churches, museums, school stores, gift shops, nonprofit resource centers, merchandise tables, and other unattended retail environments.
We also explored using the standard Square POS app for this, but because the device is customer-facing and communal, exposing areas like Customers, Transactions, and Settings creates unnecessary security and usability concerns. Kiosk solves that part of the problem very well and looks great as a customer experience.
The product already feels extremely close to supporting this use case. Even just allowing merchants to remove or customize the required pickup prompt would make a big difference.
