Customer Tax Exempt Automation at the Customer Level

The ability to have all "Tax Exempt" Customers automatically not charged Sales Tax at the Customer level and not the Item Level. By current tax LAW there are items that are taxable while the customer is tax exempt on the sale. While Square allows you to add a tax exempt status by adding their Tax Exempt ID number in the customer setup, it fails hugely in the execution of the sale. From not removing the sales tax to also not reporting it without the ability to classify Taxable verses Non taxable Sales. For this reason alone they will be never beat out their competitors for accurate reporting and handling of Non-Taxable Sales.

I've seen this issue posted for several years, with no updates to the software as of today 05/08/2023. Please listen to your customers and make this simple change without sending it over and over again to Feature Requests. If they can't handle it, hire a new team who can.

I can't believe this request for customer level tax exemption has been ignored for almost a decade. We so need this!

Please add this to the system it would be immensely helpful

Hey @kristen , any update on the status of this?

Just wondering.

Hello team,

We are selling Tesla Parts in California.
Most of our customers are resellers who hold a seller's permit, which exempts them from sales tax.

It would be great to have the possibility to mark customers as tax exempt (and store their California Resale Certificate as proof of the status). The most important feature would be to exclude sales tax from sales to such customers automatically, which will allow us to reduce human mistakes, especially when we serve returning customers.

Please let us know if there are any plans for implementing such a very useful feature?

Thank you in advance!

@ibullo Have you used the dining option work around that removes the sales tax from a whole order?  not as perfect as customer tied parameters though.

Another vote here that this is needed. It shouldn't be considered an enhancement, this is a critical product setting that is missing that impacting multiple accounts. Similarly to @LearninStuffCT, most of my invoicing is for school districts (tax exempt) but I also sell at craft shows. Having the correct accounts set to "tax exempt" is critical for me to be able to invoice correctly through Square.

I too would like to have this feature.

I am starting to do contract work for a university, which has tax exempt status.  Any current or future work will have that same tax exemption, so it would be really useful to be able to set it up and access it easily.   I am just today researching how to set it up, and I am really surprised Square has gone this long without adding this feature.

I see it's been years that you've been aware of this problem and still haven't done anything.

I guess it's finally time to go to a more responsive app.

Thank You.

We are a feed mill and have many tax exempt costumers.  I had a tax-exempt toggle added to customer cards, but it doesn't pop up or give a prompt for the customer or person behind the register.  So too often, a customer gets taxed who shouldn't be and we refund the tax amont but it still shows up as a taxable transaction in my reports.   It would be nice to actually have a function for the customers that are marked as being tax exempt.

I agree with you 100% @cRamsburg1 .  In  doing some research though, I have found multiple threads with this same/similar request (and there are more).  It would be ideal if these could be combined into one request, for better assessment by the Square dev team.

I'll flag you here @tranguyen , as it feels like there is a large amount of requests for "a tax exempt flag by customer".  Seems like a good area of focus for the team.

Thanks for the feedback and consideration.
