Cash Rounding

Cash Rounding

People have been asking for the ability to round up hundreds of times, and Square indicates they can't do it, but in Canada, they got rid of the Penny years ago, and Square has a Cash Rounding feature already built into doing this.

It makes no sense that you can't add a feature to the US version allowing a business to round up or down cash sales automatically. Ideally, you could have user-selectable options for rounding - up only or up or down - plus amount to round to 0.05 or 0.10 or 0.25 or $1 rounding. Then, please create an account where this money could be tracked so users could apply it to a charity or an employee fund.

At the very least, let customers in the US turn on the Cash Rounding feature you've already built for Canada.

See this recent article on the Penny - if Square were to make a big announcement about getting rid of the penny, it might move the issue forward. Having my staff have to deal with pennies is a waste of time - please help us get rid of them.

Currently, the time required to manage cash with pennies, nickels, and dimes is too much, both per order, and with counting. It's literally not worth the time to pass out change, add more change, count the drawer, etc..

We need a feature to round total prices up to the nearest quarter after all taxes and fees, including the tax on rounding up to the nearest quarter itself.

Currently we can include tax, and we could adjust prices, but with modifications/options/variations and partial tax percentages, this really becomes impossible on the front end building in prices, and needs to be done on the back end, at the total of sale.

This would be a feature that would put Square on the bleeding edge of productivity and efficiency.

Other benefits include higher cash tips for employees, more accurate cash management,

We could still take cash in the form or pennies, nickels, and dimes because they add up to quarter increments, but we wouldn't ever need to change them out to customers.

@shueybalooey Welcome to the community.  Currently as you know Square does not have that setting built into their system. There are only 3 options I can think of to accomplish what you want to do.

1.Manually adjust item prices so totals tend to land on .00, .25, .50, or .75 — but as you mentioned, this is tedious and breaks when you use modifiers, discounts, or mixed tax rates.

2.Add a “Rounding” service charge at checkout and manually enter the small amount to bump it to the nearest quarter — but this is manual every time and not automated.

3.Use a custom integration through Square’s API that applies rounding after tax calculation — but this would require either coding knowledge or hiring a developer.

Number 3 would be a good option, if you know someone good at coding you could have it done automatically.

With the production of the penny coming to an end @rtfulk , I 'm wondering if Square should pursue this functionality.  My old POS system had this ability, and it was quite handy in our lounge operations.

@rtfulk

Yeah unfortunately none of those options are good for us. Option 4, Square developing this feature, would generate a lot of value for new and current customers, for a very low cost to Square. For us to do #3 would be near the same amount of work as Square doing it, except it would be available to many. It would also be a high cost compared to our company, versus it being a practically zero cost to Square to develop.

Hi @shueybalooey! We appreciate your Feature Request submission! It's been updated to "Open" status. This period allows other sellers to add their use cases, strengthening your proposal and showing its demand.

Sellers, please “like” this post and comment on how this feature would aid your business to underline its significance.

I was just told by my bank that they will stop accepting pennies in my deposit NEXT FRIDAY (10/17/2025). Please consider this enhancement as high priority as this is going to be a national issue in the next few months.

Also looking to make this change since US is no longer minting pennies and circulation of these coins will become harder and harder to manage. This should have been made a priority to develop after the change was announced in US.

I agree with these posts, all cash businesses need a solution to this rather than trying to change every item price to HOPEFULLY lessen the amount of pennies. It going to throw the whole drawer off and reporting unless we can have a feature to round to nearest nickel.

please add a rounding function to either the transaction total or the change due. Pennies are going out of circulation and adjusting all prices to a tax-included round number is not ideal. We want to avoid sticker shock and we dont want to have issues with customers because they cant do the math in their heads to figure out what the pre-tax prices are, nor is it feasible to re-do our menu to show dual-column pricing (pre-tax, post-tax)

Another vote for this to happen ASAP. I feel like I have thoroughly exhausted searching for the purported "Mode" fix in Device Management and I cannot believe this would not be an easy import from Canadian features. It's increasingly frustrating working with Square when there's no easy way to ask a question or get an answer about a necessary feature on a system we pay thousands for over the year.
