Allow custom "Create Item" default settings

The default setting for Create Item used to be that it included sales tax.  Now the default for new items is non-taxable.  This change was made without notifying us and unfortunately, several new items were added without sales tax which resulted in a loss of money for our gallery.

I recommend you have a way to customize the default settings for Create Item so when items are manually added they can be consistently setup.  Many of the settings are the same among all items sold in our gallery and it would save steps if we didn't have to make the same changes for all new items.

Hi @CarolLG, If you go to settings -> Account Settings -> Payments and click on the sales tax itself, you can change it back to automatically applying it. This will make every current and future taxable item carry the sales tax. This is the setting that was defaulted to before this change occurred. It certainly caused some headaches, but you are able to change that setting back.

Great idea @CarolLG. In a pub we're adding new items all the time: weekly specials, new beers on tap, function packages, and often it's staff doing it, not me. Being able to set our own defaults (tax, category, location, kitchen printer) would mean every new item starts out right, instead of relying on someone remembering to tick every box.

There is a setting that covers new items. In the Dashboard, open your sales tax under the tax settings, and under Tax application choose the option for all current and future taxable items at your locations. One catch from Square's help page: any item marked non-taxable is skipped, so the items created while the default was off still need the tax switched on. In the Item library, select those items and use bulk edit to turn the tax on in one go.

If items reach Square another way, such as a website integration or a spreadsheet import, that default may not apply, and a small check that flags any new item without tax is a good safety net.

Are you adding items in the Dashboard, the POS app, or through an import?
