Tip Splitting Percentages

Tip Splitting Percentages

At most bars/restaurants different employees are tipped out different percentages.  Ex. Hostess might get 10%, Barbacks 20%, Bartenders get 70% etc.

The current options have it just equal for everyone which isn't how most restaurants or bars operate.   Need to implement a percentage amount when selecting tips & hourly rate for each employee type.

Hi @expresspizzaoc - Thanks for the feedback.  Once we can support the tip payouts by % we will be diving into more customization, and this is a great use case for doing so.  More to come!

Hi @tywebb04 - appreciate your patience and understand the need for this.  We are still committed to this feature and may want to engage some sellers in early testing or feedback on how this will work in platform.  Let me know if that is of interest to you and I will reach out when we are ready.

Thanks,

Jason

HI there @sreardon and @ED2023 - we hear you on this request!  While we don't have specific release timing yet, this is on our roadmap for 2023 and we hope to bring this to you in the later part of the year.

Square HAS TO implement a feature to change tip %'s on the split.  Every bar/restaurant has splitting that is different percentages.  It's really bad this feature isn't offered and needs to be addressed ASAP.  I'm going to have to change systems if this cant get fixed quick

@sreardon I use the tip splitting feature and have used it since it was in beta testing.  I’ve read your comments above and I’m not sure exactly what you are asking for.  Currently Square’s tip pooling/splitting allows you to:

* decide who is in the tip pool

* decide whether the tips are allocated — ie - 1) to the person who recorded the tips, 2) equally allocated to everyone who was clocked in when the tip was recorded, or 3) allocate tips by hours worked.

* decide what your tip pool timeframe is — a 24-hour period or a 7-day workweek.

Could you give me specifics about what you are looking for above and beyond these options?

Thanks,

In most restaurants and bars a hostess is tipped out a percentage of the tips, a barback another percentage, a bartender is a different percentage.  This is really basic stuff in the restaurant industry and the fact this isn’t available on square is disappointing

Ah.  I see.  From my experience, I’ve never worked in a state where a restaurant could do any more than suggest tip out percentages.  Where I live, it is illegal for restaurants to automatically take part of tips given to a server and allocate them to any other employee.  I’ve know a few restaurant and bar owners here who were either shut down by the authorities, or even prosecuted.  They can suggest all they want that servers tip out bartenders, bar backs, hostesses, etc, but they can not automatically confiscate part of a server’s tips to give to another.

I can not speak for Square, but I’d  be willing to bet that is not something they want to chance.  Required tip outs have always been shaky ground with labor authorities in most all states.

Having said that, you can go here to submit a feature request — https://www.sellercommunity.com/t5/Feature-Requests/ct-p/Beta-Feature-Requests.

However, in my experience that is not a quick fix, but rather something that Square discusses internally and with their Super Sellers and others to decide if they want to add it to their product roadmap.

From NJ Dept. of Labor.
“An employer must notify its employees of any required tip pool contribution amount, may only take a tip credit for the amount of tips each employee ultimately receives, may not keep any of the employees’ tips for any other purpose, and may not distribute them to non-tipped employees.”

Nothing illegal what I’m suggesting.  Just merely standard practice for most bars/restaurants.  I will certainly use the link you provided.

I never suggested there was anything illegal about what you were suggesting for your restaurant.  I was saying that this is a very complicated and ever-changing area.  Yes, it might be standard practice where you live but where I live no one will touch this ever because they know the consequences.  That’s all.

I’m pretty sure that all 50 states have 100 different ways of handling this.  Even if Square was going to decide to wade into these waters, there would be nothing quick about it, most likely.  I wish you well.

We're in the same boat on this one. We really need this same functionality, right now we have to track them on a spreadsheet.

Hi there @sreardon Thank you for submitting your request to the Square for Restaurants Ideate Board 💡

Thank you for your patience here while I reached out to the Restaurants Product Team for some insight on this feature request. They have let me know that. "Split by percentage is next on the list for us in tipping. Looking to tackle this in 2023 but no official ETA at this time".

So this is currently planned and if all goes well on the Product Team's end, this should be implemented sometime next year! We will be sure to make an announcement, here in the Seller Community, once we get closer to launching. Stay tuned for updates!
