Stock History

Is there a way to have a variations stock history follow that variation when

re-categorized?

We are continuously reorganizing Categories. I must move specific Variations, not necessarily Items, to a new Category and Item. When they are moved, the stock history is lost.

Currently I pull up stock Histories and cut and paste to an outside document. This is the only way I have found to retain the Stock History of a re-categorized variation. Am I making this harder and more time consuming than it needs to be?
