Feature Request: A report that displays the ZIP codes associated with payments

Feature Request: A report that displays the ZIP codes associated with payments

The title of this post has been edited from the original: Having a sales report that shows location of transactions

Is it possible in the sales reports to breakdown the sales by location (preferably zip code) if all transactions are done on the same account?

Most of our transactions take place at our one store, but sometimes we have transactions done on mobile devices that take place in other cities at farmers markets that we do. In order to calculate sales taxes, which vary by city and county, I would like to be able to see how much of the total monthly sales were done in which locations.

Hi there, I've gone through the support seller community and can't seem to find an answer so starting this thread.

I'm trying to understand where my customers are coming from. My business is in Los Angeles and I know we have a lot of customers coming in from outside our immediate vicinity. But would love to understand from where.

Is Square working on a report that provides customer sales reports by zip code. i.e. 10% of sales come from zip code 90046, 5% from 90069, etc. along with gross sales numbers?

LA is massive so having more visibility would be immensely helpful for marketing and event purposes.

Thanks!

Hi all!

After reading the whole thread, I understand the proposed workaround, but I don't have a database with my Customers'  ZIP codes, yet, and I don't have time to build one by asking them to input this information every time they come to the shop.

I'm evaluating moving to a larger place to expand the business, and that's why it would be good to understand where my Customers drive from - I believe this will help me make better decisions while choosing the new location.

I was wondering if Square would be able to provide a report showing the ZIP codes associated with the Credit Cards that are used to make purchases from my business? I don't need individual data, just the general geographical distribution of my Customers in the area (by ZIP code). A map showing this data would be very valuable!

Would it be possible for Square to generate something like that for us?

Thanks!

Hi @BreadHands - Welcome to The Seller Community, it's always nice to see a new face 😊

Great Question.

At this time Square does not offer a report that provides the zip codes associated with credit cards that sellers have accepted. I'll be happy to move this over to a feature request board so that our engineers have visibility of your suggestion. We appreciate you sharing your request. While there is no time frame for when it will be implemented, i'm happy to make sure our engineers have eyes on your request.

As always, feel free to stop by The Community with question, concerns and even feature requests. We are more than happy to assist.

I am in need of geographical data about my customers too. Spoke to a square rep yesterday and got the same answer you did almost a year ago when you posted.
Wondering if you found a work around? Maybe even a different or better POS app?

Hey there @comtav thanks for the follow-up on this request, I will be very honest at this time this is not something plans to implement. It would be great to get better insight into what you are needing the geographical data for. We truly value customer and merchant privacy so having a report obtaining information like this isn't on our radar right now. Is there a reason why collecting the data via the customer directory won't work? I just want to get a better understanding and more details on why this feature implementation is important to your business needs.

Hi. Building my customer directory at checkout isn’t doable because of time constraints. Answering personal questions with other customers waiting in line is not reading the room.

Most of our transactions are made using credit cards. If the billing zip code could be automatically added to the customer directory, we could use the data to see where our customers live. We are a tourist destination and so we know many people live out of state from having engaged in conversations with them. Other business decisions (like my states approval for road signage) depend on this statistic. I understand the privacy consideration of my customers. It is just the billing zip code, however.

That makes complete sense @comtav, thanks for the follow-up. I moved this thread over to our Ideate Board, which is our new process of tracking feature requests. That way our Product Team can see how many people are wanting this feature. I know it's just the zip code but again we are very cautious with any information like that and it being given out, so that would be the only drawback right now that I see with this request and it moving forward. But I do understand your business need and I am happy to pass this along to our team, and if anything changes we will make sure to provide an update on this thread. Thank you so much again for taking the time to provide this feedback.

I'll chime in again with the importance of this, even to the point of us considering other POS systems because of it (many, if not most, larger POS systems will provide some sort of geographic data).

We are expanding our locations, and knowing where customers come from is incredibly helpful in deciding which leases and areas to look at. Not to mention the valuable insights for advertising - if everyone comes from certain areas, we can make location-based advertising decisions based on that.

I don't see how providing the ZIP codes is related to privacy. Sellers can easily see the full billing/shipping addresses (including ZIP codes) in individual transactions.

The only thing going on here is the inability to export this data.

No other platform I use (Shopify, Etsy, PayPal) has this ZIP code export aversion.

Being able to sort transactions by ZIP codes for sellers who may have multiple locations in one state would likely be almost necessary to comply with sales taxes, especially in states that requires filing at the county level.

We could use the zip code information too.  We believe that over half our sales come from outside our county.  If we can show that (even just for the fraction of sales recorded on Square), we can get state approval to advertise on motorist information signs.  As other people have commented, we can't ask customers for a zip code for every transaction.
