Assign Multiple Custom Shipping Profiles to Items for International and Domestic Orders

Assign Multiple Custom Shipping Profiles to Items for International and Domestic Orders

Hi, I'm trying to set up a custom profile for an item for domestic and international shipping. It seems I can set up a custom rate for domestic or international but not for both, which defeats the purpose somewhat.

If it's not possible to do both, what happens to shipping on the item if I just set up a custom profile domestically? Does it revert to the default international rate for international customers or does it just say shipping isn't possible?

Re: Assign Multiple Custom Shipping Profiles to Items for International and Domestic Orders

I completely understand your frustration, @Plantsylancey. As soon as more information is available, we'll be sure to update this thread.

In the meantime, I recommend trying the workaround mentioned by Arie above:

1. Create a Default Shipping Profile for each state.
2. Add Shipping Rates Based on Order Weight.

  • Note: Default Profiles include all items available for shipping that don’t belong to a custom shipping profile (more on this below). New items are included automatically.

Keep in mind that any items without a specified weight will fall into the lowest shipping rate category. For example:

  • 0 kg - 4.9 kg = $10
  • 5 kg - 7.9 kg = $15
  • 8 kg - 10 kg = $20

If an item doesn't have a weight listed, it would default to a $10 shipping fee in this example.

Additionally, you could set up a Custom Shipping Profile after your default profiles for all items that don't require weight-based shipping calculations, and add a flat rate to ensure these items are covered. While I can appreciate that this will require a more manual approach, it has the potential to help you achieve the outcome you're looking for.

Please see the screenshot below for how this would set up would look on the Shipping Profiles page:

I can certainly appreciate your frustration here, @LeA10, and I wish I had further news to share with you.

We continue to pass on the feedback we receive directly to our Product team. While I agree that having the ability to create multiple custom shipping profiles would be extremely beneficial for Square Online Sellers, I don't have a timeline I'm able to share with you, nor am I able to comment on internal developmental priorities.

You can read a bit more about the feature request life cycle here - while we don't have further news to share at this time if this changes in the future we'll be sure to update this thread.

I am finding this confusing also.

we have an item that attracts a different and cheaper shipping cost to our main item so I wished to set it up as custom shipping rate. But as others have written, the custom system assumes that distinct items may be shipped to distinct destinations.  We unfortunately cant put the new items on sale until this is addressed. The only option seems to be to duplicate each item and one for local and then one for overseas shipping. Am reluctant to do this.

Heya @photos,

Thanks for writing in!

I know that shipping rates can be confusing at times. It would be helpful to get a bit more information about how you'd like your shipping to work.

e.g Are you looking to offer a different shipping rate for items based on the shipping cost? Would customers be likely to purchase both items or more than one item? Setting up weight-based shipping could be a solution here. I'll keep an eye out for your reply 😊

I'm very surprised that this doesn't work. For a shop with multiple products with multiple sizes/weights that I want to ship worldwide, then of course I need multiple shipping profiles with one item being able to be added to multiple shipping profiles. It seems completely logical to me and I am very surprised this isn't an option.

In my case

I have a paperback that has shipping with two different rates

(a) Australia

(b) Worldwide

I then have a tshirt that needs to be shipped each with different rates

(a) Australia NZ

(b) US

(c) UK

(d) Europe

(e) Worldwide

However, now I am going to have to ship the t-shirts all for the same rate and some customers are going to have to pay a much higher shipping because of it. I am very confused as to why this isn't an option as it is a standard part of shipping on an online store.

There's a workaround you can implement to make this work @AbbieLMartin 🙂 I've set this up to sell merch that I've shipped within Australia and internationally.

What you'll want to do is create a default shipping rate for every destination you're shipping to e.g. Australia, US, UK, etc. rather than a custom rate for the specific item. Next, make sure to enable shipping based on weight for the rate, rather than using a flat rate. Like this, you can specify that a t-shirt is shipped at a different rate than your paperbacks.

Please let us know how you go!

I am setting up a store that has a mixture of product types and find the shipping profiles very non-user friendly.  It seem very inaccurate to charge a flat rate or even have to work out the rates for every extra items (ie $10 postage for 1 item, then $14.99 for 2-5 items etc)

I suggest Square take a look at the very user friendly and accurate way Etsy has set up their shipping profiles.  Very easy to set up for each item based on purchasing one or multiple items and then different rates for user selected international items.

@Arie How do you apply international and Australian rates even in the default profile?  Does everything have to be by weight?  How does this work when Australia post doesn't go just by weight but also dimensions.

Thanks in advance.

Hi there,

I'm wanting to start sending some of our bulky items aus wide. There is significant differences particularly when it comes to large postage in Australia, so I'm wanting to set up pricing state by state. I've been setting up the profiles but they either delete straight away from the dashboard or don't save at all.

I was doing some research and found forum posts back in 2021 with users raising this feature missing from the platform. Have you still decided this isn't worth offering to your sellers.

Seems like a significant lack of function. If I offer a "aus wide" bulk rate, Ill have to price it at the highest rate/ omit states where it's unfeasible- not really a great option especially considering users have raised this with your for years now

Thanks for reaching out, @Plantsylancey

I've gone ahead and moved your post to the thread where we are tracking this issue, if there are any changes to share in the future, we'll update this thread to keep everyone informed.

If you have any further questions, please reach out!

Hi Katie

Square obviously don't think this function is important to sellers as it was raised 3 years ago. This is extremely disappointing. Are there any apps in your marketplace that solve this issue or any workarounds you would suggest.
