square for restaurants discounting one item

How do you apply a discount to 1 item. it always put it on the whole check.

Welcome back to the Community. 

Whenever you create or edit a discount on your Dashboard, you have the option to automatically add it to an item, category, specific times, or quantities. 

After that - add the item to your transaction and you should see an option to check the box to add the discount to that item.

FYI - This isn't in the Square documentation anywhere, but to apply a discount to 1 item in Square for Restaurants, you have to be sure "automatically add to check" is toggled off in the item setup. Then, you can hold down the item and modify it to include the discount when adding to check. If "automatically add to check" is on, you aren't able to apply discounts to single items.
