egiftcard refund

Suppose a customer comes in with an egift card and wants the money?  Can it be refunded?

Suppose a customer comes in with a $200 egiftcard and buys something for $150, and wants the balance in cash.  Can that be refunded?  If the customer is not the purchaser of the egift card, I assume it would need to be done outside Square.  For instance, ring the sale up for $200, then give the customer $50 cash back.  Correct?

What are some users' egiftcard policies, please?

Hey @robertblueeyes - Yup! You are correct. You would need to give the refund outside of Square as you described.

Hopefully, other Sellers can chime in here on their gift card policies.

Great question.

I've been using Square Gift Cards for a few years now, and luckily haven't had any customers ask to cash out / refund their cards.

I think only a few states legally require you to do this - and even then it's usually for amounts less than $10 or $5:

Simple:

https://www.giftcards.com/gcgf/return-giftcards

In-Depth:

I don't live in a state that does, so I would have a policy that we do not cash out / refund the gift cards.

In terms of how to do it if you wanted to - you could ring up the sale for the $150 as it is and charge that gift card. Then after that transaction is complete, clear the balance of the gift card, give the customer the remaining balance in cash, and write a note or something saying that you cashed out this gift card for $50, along with the gift card number (or last 4 digits).

Hope this helps,
