are square readers linked to accounts?

i recently bought a collection of stuff from an artisan who decided to get out of the business, included in that lot was a square reader for chips and contactless payments. im about to start doing shows myself and wanted to know, can i use this reader with my account or is it somehow linked to the previous owners account?

No, the hardware is completely separate from accounts. 

To to use any hardware you have acquired, all you have to do is log into your account from whatever device you’re using. The hardware will then work for you.
