Why use marketing campaigns if you can't drive online sales?

I can find no point to using the marketing tool if our purpose of using the marketing tool is to drive online sales. Am I missing something or will that NOT work for online sales? At. All. Help?

Sure you can.  You can feature a product or use a quick update template, state an online offer or discount code even add a "Shop Now" button.  My main purpose for using it was to drive online sales.  Here's a help page to get you started.

Specifically - If I were to send out an email in which I'd like for people to get a discount if they buy a specific product using the marketing tool provided, Square generates a promo code and embeds it in the email. This embedded promo code is not usable to the recipient online. It is only usable if the recipient comes in or calls in their order. Am I understanding this correctly - this is my experience & I'd like to be sure that I'm not missing something.

Here is what you can do.  Create your discount like you do any discount but make it available online and create your discount code and set the other parameters.

Then in Marketing, I use "send a quick update" template.  There you can add your text and include your Discount code.  Add a button that links to the product or online store.

I understand that. I think the difference is that I can designate a single item or category, etc using the marketing campaign and I don't have that same functionality using the discount feature. Is that correct?
