Why is Insert or Swipe to Pay displayed before transaction is complete?

Let's say this picture (stolen from another thread) is a new transaction being rung up on the Square Register:

What exactly happens if the customer swipes or inserts their card before the transaction is complete?

I think this could end up with disputes if the customer swipes their card at this point and then the order changes where say the "Fries" quantity changes to 2, which then changes the total of the order. The customer will recall paying $19.00, when in fact they would then be paying $22.50.

I don't think the payment instructions "Insert or Swipe to Pay" should be displayed until the transaction is fully entered and "Charge" is pressed on the main terminal.

Hi there, @HeatherM 👋 Thanks for taking the time to write us here. Good to hear from you again!

I think I can provide some clarity here. If you are in the middle of a transaction and the customer dips their card into the Customer Display, the Register should not actually proceed with charging the card until the Seller has selected charge on their main display. The same will apply here for all of our Point of Sale products. This would prevent against the ability of over or under charging your customer based upon adding or subtracting items from an order.

In terms of your suggestion regarding when to display "Insert of Swipe Pay," I can definitely see how refraining from the payment prompt until pressing 'charge' would be helpful. Like all requests, I'm going to push this over to our Product Teams and Managers so they can review your feedback! I will bounce back and let you know here once any change is implemented.

Thanks, again!
