Hello!
I am in need of your help as I am not getting anywhere with the Square Support Team after I made a purchase.
I have been using the Square Stand with my iPad and a contactless reader for about 1.5 years. I decided to make an upgrade by adding a Square Customer Display. I bought the display and a cable per Square Team's instruction. However, after I connected all cables, the Square application from my iPad is not recognizing the display. The Customer Display does not power on. It doesn't do anything after I connect it via USB.
Does any of my fellow Square user experience a similar issue? Any help would be greatly apprecaited. Thanks, everyone!
Ryan
Hello @Flat_White_C
The customer display you bought I think is specific to the Square Register, not the Square Stand. The register comes with a customer display built into the system.
For the stand however, you can enable a Customer Display. It is off by default on the accounts, but a quick phone call to Customer Support can turn it back on. (Or maybe it is already since you were working with them?) It'll be listed under Settings -> Hardware -> Customer Display on the stand tablet if it is.
All you need for a Customer Display for iOS is another iOS device that is capable of iOS 10 or greater. Put the Square POS on the display tablet, log into it using the usual login info, go to the Customer Display setting and choose the "Use as Display" button. Follow the instructions on the screen regarding bluetooth and network settings. Then on your stand tablet, go to the Customer Display setting and choose the "Connect a Display" option. It should connect automatically.
Please note the Customer Display for iOS is very limited in scope. All it can do is show a list of the items sold for the order plus a grand total. The customer cannot interact with it at all.
Hope this helps!

thank you for getting back to me! Square finally got back to me. They acknowledged that I was misinformed by Square’s representative. Long story short, like you said, my Square Stand cannot be connected to the Customer Display. I wish I was informed with the correct info initially, but leaned my lesson. Now, it’s time to stay with Square or switch to Clover!
thanks again!!
I've seen a lot of mixed information in threads spanning 5 years regarding customer displays, so I was hoping to get a current update on whether using a second iPad as as customer display with Square Retail + Square Stand is a possibility at all yet.
Hi there, @wordhorde 👋 Thanks for taking the time to reach out to us here on the Seller Community. Happy to hear from you!
So sorry for the confusion here. The Square Stand does offer the ability to attach a separate iPad as a customer display. You can find details on that here. However, this display set up does not currently run as compatible with Square for Retail - only our normal Point of Sale software currently.
Let us know if anything else comes up!
Thanks for the confirmation. I have to say it is quite frustrating that a useful feature is available for the free Square POS app, but not the Square for Retail that I will be paying for. It seems like feature development for paying customers should be prioritized. I hope that Square will consider adding this feature in the near future.
Thanks for the info. So customer cannot sign or add a tip on the customer display using that method?
Correct, the Customer display would be just that a Display and not way to sign or add a Tip etc. You still need to turn the main stand for the person to sign or add the Tip. This was to only reason I was thinking of upgrading to a Register, but decided to just stay with the Stands.
Thanks for that info. I have now been looking into adding a Square Terminal to my Stand setup. Apparently it can be synced to the ipad and used as a customer display that can allow customer to sign, tip or request/print a receipt. Still $300 but that is better than having to buy the whole Register and it prints receipts. https://squareup.com/help/us/en/article/7428-connect-your-square-terminal-to-spos
Hey, I'm looking for these features as well. Did you purchase the Terminal and does it work as a customer display?
I looked at purchasing the square register but we use other apps that are not available on that and you can no longer swipe gift cards on it either.
Nevermind. I just read it doesn't work with Square Appointments.
This is so frustrating! I use square for retail and square appointments and can't have a customer facing display. Why isn't all of this integrated for those of us that need it. Seriously looking to move away from square. With all the monthly fees for both apps, loyalty and so on I should be able to have a second display that's customer interactive. Would be nice to have just one app that does it all.
