Second layer modifiers

Is there a way to modify a modifer? For example, I have a menu item that as "side" modifer. The side options are a salad, or macaroni salad, or grilled vegetables, etc.  But if the customer chooses a salad as the modifer, they then are able choose their dressing.  if the modifier is the salad, i dont not see a way to add another modifer for dressing choice.  Is this possible or do i need to set it up a different way?

There isn't a way to modify a modifier, however, you can create a modifier for each salad+dressing combination (e.g. Ranch Salad, Bleu Cheese Salad, Cesar Salad etc.) as a workaround if it fits your business better. 

The other solution would be to create the salad as its own item, and then create a dressing modifier set that you can apply to that item. Essentially you'd have the side selections as their own items that you add to the sale separate from the main menu item, and the modifier sets for each topping/variation. This is how the modifier features were intended to be used.
