Square Terminal

We regulary get tables of 6+ in our coctail bar who use the same tab.

One party member leaves early and wants to pay say 1/6th of the tab total at that time.

ie. Tab is £240 and 1 member of 6 leaves and asks to pay £40. There is no way of paying £40 off the £240 leaving £200 balance then letting the remaining 5 guests keep topping up the same tab.

We cannot find a work around, so it all has to be done manually.

This came up recently and the only workaround I could come up with is one that I still think is pretty neat! 

When guest 1 leaves and wants to pay £xx just sell them a gift card and keep it at the bar. Then when the tab is closed out, use that gift card first and the people left settle the rest. 

If this happens a lot then it could even be worth getting some plastic gift cards (as you're not giving them out they'll be reused each day etc.) so it's a quick simple swipe each time rather than codes and receipts/emails.

Can you let me know what device you are using? If you are using Square Point of Sale app on an iPad, you can split items from an open tickets but I wanted to know your setup to make sure I give you the right information.

Hey @Emma_ - that's a good point!

When this came up before it was mentioned that this can end up being quite long winded and not 'in the spirit' of the party. ie - whoever is leaving want's to make their contribution to the drinks so far for the entire table, not necessarily just pay for the specific drinks they had.

Yes as long as you cant part pay the only option is to do your work around Sam or manually work it all out.

Assuming part payments would be useful to alot of people and Square will look into adding this feature.

Hey @KathleensBar, just stepping in for Emma here. 

At the moment, it isn't possible to do partial payments unless you are separating each customer's bill by item into separate tabs and then just processing a sale for the person who is leaving. It's a great idea though and can see why it would be useful for your business. I'll pass the idea over to our team. 

However, as a workaround, you could create an open food item that is variably priced and ring up the customer for that in a separate bill. Then, you could apply a variably priced discount to the original tab and apply the credit from the customer that had left previously.
