Newbie Question: How exactly does the Square barcode reader work?

I am in the process of setting up a new retail store.  I'd like to use Square to track inventory and it seems a barcode reader would be helpful but I'm not sure exactly how it works.  Do I have to create my own barcodes or can I use the barcodes that come with the product from the manufacturer? Are there any step by step tutorials around? Thanks for any help you can give!

This is very simple.  If your produces come with UPC number you enter that number in the item SKU field.  Then when you scan the UPC it rings up that item associated with the UPC.  Make sure you get a compatible scanner.
