Happy New Year, Sellers!
On Tuesday, January 18th, our Device Experience team hosted a Q&A focused on sellers' needs with device monitoring. Topics covered related to: Square Card Readers, Square Stand, Square Register, Square Terminal, printers, scales, scanners, and cash drawers.
We've got exciting plans this year that will help you monitor device connectivity, battery status, and logins from a single hub within the online Square Dashboard. We can't share out specific details on our product roadmaps, though we will certainly make sure all of the feedback that came through on this thread is incorporated into the decision making process.
Hello Everyone,
Thank you again for taking the time to weigh in with your questions and feedback! The experiences you shared will help us as we continue to iterate going forward. As we close out this thread, we wanted to do a recap on the themes that came up frequently:
We did receive a variety of questions and feedback on Square for Retail, Appointments, and Square for Restaurants apps — as well as feature requests for inventory and order management. If you asked for a feature that does not exist today or identified issues, we passed along your feedback internally to the respective product teams. We take seller feedback very seriously and are assessing feasibility and priority.
For those of you who are having device issues including battery issues, please contact the Customer Success team.
We appreciate you taking the time to share your experiences and we'll continue to make improvements based on your business needs. For the latest updates, subscribe to Product Updates and you'll receive notifications of our newest features.
HI @Addison, We are working on a solution for table side ordering for Restaurants. More on this to come soon. In the meantime, you can use a supported phone/tablet with Square Reader. Some of our sellers are using this configuration for tableside ordering.
I would like to be able to add handhelds to my restaurant group with the connectivity and ease of use that Toast has...what do we have in the works or available now? I have been asking for year and the mini is not a great tableside tool.
@Addison Have you looked at the square terminal? It is wifi enabled, wireless, can take swipe, tap, & dip payments, print a receipt, and can utilize open tickets. I know it can be used very easily to take payments table side and works as a customer facing display for payments with the square stand (I currently use 2 this way).
I know the interface is not perfect yet, but it basically is a mobile version of the point of sale software and can be used to take orders also. I know this is a big feature request and square is looking at it seriously. The terminal is a great piece of hardware that square is trying to utilize more than ever for us sellers.
I would love to know when updated hardware is coming out. For example, I can’t use the current square stand with my iPad. Also, a lot of the recommended hardware is out dated.
I constantly have issues syncing inventory between square and Etsy. Suggestions?
Hello @Earthpaul,
Seems weird that you are not able to process a one-time payment of $40.00. What kind of Square reader and mobile device are you using?
Hi @Jlparker712 Great feedback! These are the sort of things we want to solve with the new device monitoring feature.
How are you syncing inventory between Square and Etsy?
Hardware, as I have mentioned before:
Got it! @kmacmmurchy - Now we get what you mean. Your feedback and details will be helpful to our Product team as they provide us with a good understanding of how this feature can help you run your business.
Hi @kmacmmurchy Thanks for reaching out.
For #1, our Checkout team is looking to improve this experience. I will ask them to contact you to get further feedback.
On #2, We don't have any immediate plans to share, but we are exploring if this is feasible.
On #3, Which system did you use previously?
Hello @AnjaliA, our old system is Restaurant Manager rmpos.com. They now have a tablet system, but I've never tried it. The system I have is version 21 run on windows. It's very robust when it comes to reporting as well which I have posted about because I think Square could really benefit from some of the ways to drill down plus the ability to automate month-end, payroll etc. I'd be happy to go through some of the really strong features for reporting such as menu engineering, labour etc.
I have one other feature that has me baffled regarding hardware/software and gift cards. Unless I'm doing something wrong, when I connect the USB Barcode scanner to the Square Register it DOES NOT read the bar code on Gift Cards which seem odd because when I use the bluetooth scanner on an iPad with Square POS I can scan Gift Card bar codes. Speaking of OLD SYSTEM and bar codes, on our old system many of my customers would put their Gift Cards into their Apple or Android wallet and I could scan them with a barcode scanner. They could see their balance etc in real time, reload link etc. With Square gift cards it will work with a third-party app such as Stocard, but it's not ideal and I can't get it working with the USB barcode scanner on the Register.
Seems like some software/hardware configs are not created equal which is kind of flaky no?
Please advise.
Thanks, Ken
Thanks @kmacmmurchy. Scanning gift cards during checkout just went live on Android. We previously just supported iOS.
Yes, but what about Square Register? On iOS you can use camera or Bluetooth SocketScan S700 to scan barcode. I purchased the USB barcode scanner from Square for my one location that has Register and it doesn't scan Gift Card bar codes.
Hi there,
I own a small Hair, Nail, Massage and Makeup business and have the Square register. To be honest I am disappointed in the usability of the system for my industry. I used to use Fresha but knew I needed a setup like the register system hence why I chose Square. A few points to help support my industry would be.
1. Printable Customer files, notes for previous appointments. I have seen this been asked for quite a few years.
2. Stock inventory - When using stock for Salon use, being able to customize Stock Actions, instead of Loss, restock, theft etc. Being able to create a reason and then it can be monitored more efficiently within stock reports - such as colour tubes, developers or products.
3. Can we have colour coded services on the calendar. So if a client has a cut, colour and eyebrow wax - they are different colours and easy to understand at a glance.
4. A magnetic stylus pen would be a great idea for those of us with fat fingers and easier for signatures when required.
5. Being able to write notes or information directly onto the register with said stylus pen and maybe card scanner, instead of typing every letter. Even a cordless keyboard attachment.
6. Are we able/ do we have barcodes for services as this might be a quicker way to checkout as the search and grid system take a while if you have a lot of services and products?
Overall a more user friendly program. Still quite confusing for those not technologically advanced and I find Fresha easier to digest, use and presentation.
Hope this helps, kindest regards
Hi @SST21 Thanks for reaching out. I will pass on #1-3 and #6 to our Appointments team.
Thanks for the feedback on stylus pen for Square Register. We will look into it.
The customer facing screen doesn't give a tip option, how do I add this? It was actually there when I first set up the register but for some reason went away? Also my starting cash is set to a default amount how do I set that @ 0. so I can have a custom amount daily.
To set tipping options on Square POS app,
If you are using Restaurants or Retail app, this setting is on Square Dashboard.
If you are asking about quick options set on the keyboard, you can add or change it by going to Settings> Checkout > Quick Amounts.
I use Square for Retail on the Square Register as well as Payroll, Appointments and Marketing.
1. On the register, if you scan a barcode but you are not on the correct screen, the barcode scanner should not beep or should beep differently notifying you that the item did not show up in the cart.
2. The Register screen should not time out and go dark if you are in the middle of scanning a customer's items.
3. Lag time during different functions cause serious delays.
a. If we search for an item in the system on the register, it takes at least 12 seconds to bring it up.
b. When accessing reports, if they have anything to do with inventory they take significantly longer to load. Some will never load and just gives me an error message.
c. When using the Printing labels from Item Library, we have a very bad load time. Sometimes it takes minutes to bring up one item. It will pull up the item, then it disappears before we can click on it, then it brings up our entire inventory to choose from and then it will auto load the very first item in our inventory.
d. We also have issues creating purchase orders and saving them properly. We can be in the middle of a purchase order and the system will freeze and then all of our work is lost. We have had issues with pulling up sku's to add to a purchase order. The same thing happens as when we try to print labels.
We have been using this system since the beginning of 2020. When we first started, they system was fast, and everything went great. about a year ago, it started to slow down. I was told that the number of items in our library should not affect our performance, but we currently have over 60,000 different sku's. We also use the split screen function on our windows 10 computers - we pull up the item library on one side and the purchase order on the other so we can search the item library for the item we want to add to the purchase order.
Hi @All4Kids,
Re #1, Most scanners we support today don’t allow an external system like Point of Sale to control the beeps. We will investigate if the newer scanner models allow this functionality.
Re #2, Good feedback. We will look into it.
We have passed on the issues related to delays/lags to our Retail team. Usually spotty wifi causes delays and lags, so we recommend checking you are getting adequate wifi signal where your devices are located.
Also RE delays in printing labels: we recommend trying Google Chrome Version 97.0.4692.71 or higher. Let us know if the experience doesn't get better even after upgrading.
..
Is there a demo or trial version?❔🔥
